Get them out of our OCEAN!!!

Get them out of our OCEAN!!!

Postby flamingfingers » Aug 22nd, 2017, 2:23 pm

Pens raising Atlantic salmon in the waters off the coast have been involved with many problems - sea lice, diseases, escapes, and this latest one needs to be addressed and action taken:

Solar eclipse’s tides blamed for broken net, up to 305,000 Atlantic salmon dumped into waters near San Juans.

Why aren't Trudeau and Horgan dealing with this?

Couple of BUMS they are!

salmon farms have been in north America since the 70s. smaller scale but they have been around and steadily growing. can't blame clark, harper, trudeau or horgan for it.

It's an American fish farm. Let them deal with it.

If you lived in Victoria and looked easterly, you could see the San Juans. May not mean much to the Okanaganites tho, eh?

Cypress Island where the net ripped and released over 300,000 mature Atlantic salmon is a very short distance from the mouth of the Fraser River - a major waterway for breeding salmon to reach their spawning grounds and for immature salmon to access the sea after hatching. There is virtually no hope that all of the Atlantic salmon released will be caught before they arrive at the mouth of the Fraser..

It's time to get these ocean net pens out of the ocean and onto land so they pose less threat to our wild salmon stocks!!!

That's probably the best summation of the basic input/output problem with fish farms.

Carp - well - yuck! But that is indeed what Chinese peasant farmers grow. Virtually no protein input, they just chuck all their kitchen scraps and spoiled veggies in the pond.

Makes me wonder if we couldn't go a little further down the food chain for fish farming, say to Rock Cod (mmm...great fish and chips!). Or Kelp Greenling (good eating too!).

So it's our problem too.

hg:

Nothing wrong with carp flesh - carp can survive in veg matter but prefers to scavange on the bottom for worms, crustaceans etc. It is for sure an ugly fish and it pretty bony as well which people don't like. You cactch them almost anywhere - Okanagan Lake included. Same with whitefish - they eat about the same thing carp do and have a WONDERFUL and tasty flesh!! None I know of in Okanagan Lake but I did catch one on a trip up around Lilloett.

Ling cod can be caught in Okanagan Lake but are not at all 'sporty' to catch - hook one and it's like hauling up part of an old log!

I don't buy Sockeye Salmon - too dry, harsh taste and too expensive!! I do occasionally buy pink salmon, white spring or coho. But I prefer to treat myself with a beautiful piece of sablefish or if I can't get that, halibut.

West Coast mussels when in season, usually November to end January are a special treat - get some and you will never eat PEI mussels again. I don't know anything about freshwater mussels - the edible kind, but that might be something to learn about.

Nothing wrong about 'eating lower on the hog'.
