Are BC Ferries going to add staff to police all car decks for people wishing to nap on the ferry trip and force them out of their vehicles? Are BC Ferries also going to add staff to police all outside deck areas to confront a smoker and then what are they going to do? Toss the smoker overboard? Separate pet owners from their pets? Allow dogs on leash into public areas on upper decks - what about other passengers who have pet dander allergies or are afraid of dogs?

They really should re-think their blanket policies.

Some of the BC Ferry routes are 8-16 hours sailing time.

If you cannot go 8-16 hours without a smoke. Might I suggest taking the drive, or a flight to Prince Rupert instead of the ferry.

And flamingfingers, they already have staff. I imagine though that if you're found in a vehicle, they will likely ask you to go to the passenger deck. If you're smoking you will be asked to put it out. They havent said anything about fines.

Honestly though why would anyone want to sit in their car on the ferries? You're travelling in some of the most beautiful areas of the province. Get up, walk around and take in the scenery.

There's no reason BC Ferries should be run like the Soup Nazi's take-out service. People should be able to bring their pets up to the outdoor deck area (on leash, of course) and enjoy the ride like everyone else.

...It is important to remain with your pet in the pet area during the vessel crossing. We ask that the pet area is not used by your pet to relieve him/herself. But we understand accidents occur – we just ask that you please clean up the accident.

Upon the vessel’s arrival, when you hear the announcement for customers to return to their vehicles, please make your way to the disembarkation area (often on the lower car deck). Once the vessel is secured you will be directed to disembark with your pet ahead of vehicular traffic.

Done the trip several times. What else is there to see?? Maybe drove several hundred kms and just want to lay back, relax and have a snooze. Where on the public upper decks is there a place that you can do that, eh?

To get some rest. Some of us are travelling a long ways to get where we want to go and there's still work in front of us. The scenery isn't changing with every ferry ride.

Smoking is one issue - your rights as a smoker end at my nose. No smoking on the ferry should be painless.
Dogs - this will be interesting, people cannot stay with their dogs on the truck (lower) deck but then that place is uncomfortable for people and dogs as it has no window and relies on fans so it is warm (not hot) and humid and smelly. The upper deck has big openings in the side and if you are parked there you can stay in your car with the dogs. Sounds like bad luck if you get the lower deck- you could avoid that by making a reservation. But the dog holding area is OK - contained, washable and not real comfortable but it is only 95 minutes and like the smokers the dog owners will just have to get used to it.

If you look at well thought out policies in other countries, they don't do the dumb stuff the BC "off topic do - like banning nicotine vaping etc.

Obesity is a far more determinative factor in cancer etc. 32.5% of BC residents are obese. Going to ban them from the ferries?

The national average is 1/5 of Canadians smoke, higher for Americans. Really promotes the tourism industry on Vancouver Island etc. when you hang out a sign saying "you are not welcome". A chunk of those who smoke will just say "to heck with that" - and then the "off topic can whine when ridership drops and BC Ferries has to raise rates.

It is just plain dumb. It is a free country supposedly, so if somebody wants to drink a dozen cokes a day, or whatever, then the "off topic should mind their own business.
