Devastated by deaths

Post by Cactusflower »

I heard on the news today that 55% of ice arenas in Canada use ammonia in their refrigeration systems. Why? Is it because it's cheaper than Freon?

BTW, does anyone know how Karen Magnussen is doing after her near-death experience with the ammonia leak in that North Shore arena? IMHO, ammonia should be banned in all refrigeration systems.

good grief. More dead bodies being thrown into a discussion about the BC Liberals. This is just getting beyond sick.

The BC Federation of Labour released a statement on Wednesday addressing the three fatalities that occurred as a result of the ammonia leak at the Fernie Memorial Arena on Tuesday.

“Today our thoughts are with the families, friends and community of the three workers who were killed yesterday while working at an ice rink in Fernie," stated Irene Lanzinger, president of the BC Federation of Labour. no link

Freon is more toxic to the environment.

Freon is a brand name, like Kleenex, Ski-Doo etc.
from wiki (my bold)

Most uses of CFCs are now banned or severely restricted by the Montreal Protocol of August 1987, as they have been shown to be responsible for ozone depletion.[5] Brands of Freon containing hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) instead have replaced many uses, but they, too, are under strict control under the Kyoto Protocol, as they are deemed "super-greenhouse effect" gases. They are no longer used in aerosols, but to date no suitable, general use alternatives to the halocarbons have been found for refrigeration that are not flammable or toxic, problems the original Freon was devised to avoid.

So if ammonia is used in 55% of ice rinks, what do they use in the other 45%? My experience with Freon goes back a long way. When we first installed a freezer in our fishing vessel, R-12 was the refrigerant of the day. Then several years later we were told we had to get rid of the R-12 and switch to a Freon with a different number, but I can't remember what that number was. I suppose, after reading everything on Wiki, the person who bought our boat had to at some time change the refrigerant again.

My goodness.......it looks like climate change has touched us all at some point.

not sure what climate change, man-made or otherwise, has to do with this discussion.

From the above link. Possible that procedures were not followed?

MAIN CHARACTERISTICS OF A CLASS-T ROOM

As required by Code B52 of the CSA (Canadian Standards Association), a mechanical room with an ammonia refrigeration system must comply with Class-T requirements which include:

A room sealed off from indoor air and constantly ventilated with outside air.
Ventilation control outside of the room.
Controlled access to the room.
A door giving direct access to the exterior of the building.
A vestibule with a fireproof door giving access to the room.
Masks and/or personal respirators available in case of major leaks.
Written emergency procedures.
Staff exercises and training.
An ammonia detector coupled with an alarm system that sets off the emergency ventilation system to exhaust accumulated ammonia vapours to the outside.
An alarm to alert maintenance staff and firefighters.
No combustion equipment in the room.
Why use a big word when a diminutive one will suffice.
