Family Day

Post by Urbane »

In 2012 a two-week process, which included an online poll, concluded that most people preferred the second Monday in February as Family Day. Whether or not the poll truly reflected the wishes of the majority, the date could be changed now. Are you in favour of leaving it on the second Monday in February or moving it to the third Monday in February?

How much difference does it really make? So long as it is a day off with pay?

What exactly is the rational for changing the holiday, other than the NDP trying to undo absolutely everything the Liberals have done, good or bad.

I don't see the sense in changing the holiday.

It mattered enough that the government listened to the people in making the second Monday the holiday.

I think the rationale is to align BC's Family Day with Alberta's, so that folks visiting friends and family from out of province will have the same days off. Makes sense. However, the rationale for keeping them separate is so the ski resorts don't get overwhelmed by having both holidays on the same weekend.

The public was requested to give their opinion and out of 31,146, the majority voted for the second Monday. Everyone had the opportunity to participate.

There's a narrative out there that Christy Clark decided to help her "friends" in the ski industry and selected the second Monday in February as the day. However, you're quite right Fancy. There was a consultation process and an online poll in which anyone could participate. People chose the second Monday. It really doesn't matter to me which day it is but having it on the second Monday makes sense for those who don't want long line-ups at the ski hills.

Since large majority of Provinces have gone with 3rd Monday in February, BC is only 1 on 2nd Monday.
It would make sense to move it to 3rd Monday of February.
I don't give a damn whether people/posters like me or dislike me, I'm not on earth to win any popularity contests.

Well then, the current government is capable of making life changing decisions for all BCers. That has got to be the biggest decision that they have made so far.
Good for them, the people have spoken. How many study groups and how much was spent to arrive at this monumental change? How much is now going to be spent to change all of next year's calendars and how much will be lost by the printers for the calendars that have already been produced in the anticipation of Jan. 1, 2018?

UBCM - Resolution B121 Family Day - Endorsed

http://www.ubcm.ca/assets/Resolutions~and~Policy/Resolutions/Resolutions_Decisions_2017.pdf

UBCM passed a resolution asking the Province to change the date, so no ... it's not just something the NDP wants to reverse because they want to undo everything Clark did.

Pro: lined up with other provinces (visiting, etc)
Con: lined up with other provinces (competing over recreation activities, hotels, etc).

If anyone believes Christy Clark chose the date to agree with any polls I've got a perfectly good swamp for sale that might interest you.
The date was chosen to satisfy big business owners, (think Big White and that annoying Micheal Balliwal) and it makes no sense that every other province and the entire United States can accommodate a common date yet BC cannot. Can you say greed?

Change it to mirror the rest of North America and do it now.
Someone has to say it.

It's not that we can't. It's that as a popular destination, locals would be at even footing with others seeking a long weekend vacation. Or by going a different week, only competing with other locals. BC can make in extra tourist cash, then a bit of extra local tourism.

So far 50.29% of the people responding to the poll voted to change it to the 3rd Monday.

Every person asked in the video said change it to align with other provinces. Only person complaining about the proposed change is Big White Ski Resort's Michael J. Ballingall ... no surprise there.

Try doing business with companies in other provinces when your stat days don't coincide - PITA to say the least.

One daughter lives on the prairies. Another lives on Vancouver Island. They'd like to come back home to the Okanagan with their kids for a visit with the folks back home, and with each other's families. And then we found out that it wasn't Family Day after all. It was Ski Resort Day.

Change it to be the same as the other provinces.
