Look, I suspect this ship was purchased as it is a way quicker turn around than designing, tendering and building one here in BC. I also suspect the winning builder would be suspect as the lefties would have suspected they paid off the liberals, regardless the fact union members in all likely hood would be building it.
Purchasing a ship to provide a service during a short season and having it re-fit here is a good use of our tax dollars. Do it all here from scratch and the cost would likely be triple. Bad use of our tax dollars. There goes that bad word called " math" again....
What is unknown is likely the Greek safety rules and regs are different than ours and I suspect there could very well be some surprises once the re-fit gets under way.
The run from Port Hardy to Bella Coola and perhaps Ocean Falls and Bella Bella can have some nasty sea states in the top end of Georgia Straight. The higher bow on this looks better to handle the sea than the older boats in the fleet. Regardless could be beam seas all the way across, hope they have a good number of barf-bags.

Let's do a Google/Wikipedia search of "The Tyee" together. This is what comes up.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Tyee

I won't express my disdain for this source if you don't base your opinion upon this website alone.

This pretty much says it all......
The name "Tyee" is based on the current local definition of Tyee salmon—a Chinook or Spring salmon of 30 lbs or more. The word is derived from the Nuu-chah-nulth language, meaning a chief, a king, or champion.[1] It also embodies the magazine's dedication to publishing lively, informative news and views, to "roam free, and go where we wish" as the tyee salmon do

Roaming free and going where they wish is something they are certainly good at. [icon_lol2.gif]

Editor got fired from his last job, big surprise there.

Cactusflower wrote:Please give me a link to some numbers. I understand the Greek ferry cost $12.6 million. How much would it would have cost to 'resurrect' one of the old BC Ferries that are being stashed in various coves on the coast?

How about you do the homework and show some initiative instead of trying others to make a presentation for you to shoot full of holes?

Okey dokey.

Something that is derelict already would seem to cost a heck of a lot more to restore than one currently running.

Where's the proof of your assertion that building the ferry in BC would have been a better decision?

Looking forward to perusing your proof.

Oh and BTW assumption and speculation on your part, does not equate to proof, just as it doesn't in all the other topics that trait keeps manifests itself in.

Again, do the homework for yourself and tell us all what it cost to restore a boat from the 1950s and decommissioned in 1960.
AND how big is that boat? How many cars will it hold? How many people?

According to the dictionary, the word 'derelict' means 'left or abandoned by the owner or guardian'. What made you jump to the conclusion that one of those ships cant be refurbished and put back on the fleet?

- also means "In a very poor condition as a result of disuse and neglect" neglected, in ruins, bad state of repair etc. etc.
Collins, Oxford, Cambridge etc. etc.

So then how about you taking on the challenge to answer your own question and find a suitable boat, in BC, and tell us what it would cost to be better than the ferry choice that was made.

If CF had their way no doubt the SS Sicamous would be recommissioned and put back into service. [icon_lol2.gif]

From Cactusflower's link:
fleet of dilapidated boats
which means they are "in a state of disrepair or ruin as a result of age or neglect"
