As soon as I read an assumption like this..............

“They can transport whatever they want, at any time, in an overloaded many-mile-long train and continue not to maintain their tracks or trains properly.”

I change channels, 'cause pipelines are safer and she should not have bought a house by the train tracks
Once I thought I was wrong.....but I was mistaken...

That's what I was thinking. So their position is that fossil fuel isn't actually bad, only when it's moved in pipelines. Somehow the distinction is lost on me. I guess I need more coffee.

:bethecoffee: <---------comin' right up Fluffy. C&S?

All forms of transferring oil brings forth various forms and degrees of risk. I'm having trouble with "safer" as opposed to "which way of transferring oil mitigates the risk the most."

Pipelines burst.
Rail cars derail.
Oil tankers spill.
Weather influences it all.
As WW3 develops, no one is going to be dissing the "preppers." What have you done?

Here's a short read from the Fraser Insitute that shines some light on facts conveniently ignored by those arguing against pipelines.

Good comparison by incidents, but neglects to talk about volume of incidents.

I'm not disagreeing with the conclusions but it's missing an important metric to be a slam dunk.

Oil by rail can be safer than it currently is. That is not saying that pipelines are less safe than rail.

Transporting oil by rail doesn’t have to be nearly as dangerous as it currently is.

“They can transport whatever they want, at any time, in an overloaded many-mile-long train and continue not to maintain their tracks or trains properly.”

https://www.desmog.ca/2017/11/14/six-si ... -way-safer

On Dec. 20, 2016 — less than a month after the federal approvals of the Kinder Morgan TransMountain and Enbridge Line 3 pipelines — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau clearly stated that “putting in a pipeline is a way of preventing oil by rail, which is more dangerous and more expensive.”

“There’s a way to transport bitumen in its raw form, which is not volatile. But that requires special heated cars.”

Raw bitumen, also referred to as “neatbit,” would greatly reduce the amount of diluent used in shipping bitumen and in turn decrease the risk levels of oil-by-rail. The process would require a significant amount of capital investment, and hasn’t been explored much by industry.

Newly Approved Pipelines Quadruple Capacity Historically Shipped by Rail

The recent approvals of the Kinder Morgan Trans Mountain and Enbridge Line 3 pipelines will allow for the addition of 900,000 bpd in pipeline capacity from the oilsands, assuming a 15 per cent surplus for outages and maintenance.

That’s four times the amount of oil that has ever been shipped by rail, either for exports or domestic transport.

Oil by rail can most definitely be safer....

Just remove the wheels, and weld all the tankers together...

Oh wait.....That's a pipeline...

nevermind....

and to make it even safer - put it underground! What a novel idea!
