How the BC Libs manipulated BC hydro

Post by maryjane48 »

Hydro has a long history of stampeding through the regulatory process, drowning opponents in paper submissions with its army of lawyers, always confident that the Liberal government would bail it out through a cabinet order overriding the Commission if the regulator tried to say no.

As far as the rate freeze it now seems that was brilliant move by ndp to expose how the bclibs controlled and manipulated everything to justify a end game . Putting the cart before the horse so to speak

Yes, it looks like the BC Hydro/BC Liberal dirty laundry is just beginning to be aired. Time to run out and buy more clothes pins.

YES, buy more cloths pins, because they will be needed due to lack of Hydro power to run the clothes dryer in the future. Since the "freeze" issue has been brought up again, what will thaw those panties, in a bunch, that have been frozen solid on the clothes line?

Excellent find! I wonder how long it's going to be before the usual suspects begin trying to shoot it down.

^^ don't need to. Just ask Ontario how wind and solar actually work out. :200:

^^ About 2 1/2 hours. And then all you could come up with was the old 'Ontario failed' argument. Well, we all know why Ontario's green energy plan failed. B.C. is much smarter, or will be if the previous government and their supporters stop trying to interfere.

It's not really an argument. It's reality. Any government dumb enough to buy into disgusting wind and stupid solar is doomed to fail. And it's always the taxpayers and the poor who get screwed.

How much is one kWh in Ontario?
As a result of increases that kicked in May 1, the off-peak rate (weekends and holidays, and weekdays 7 p.m.-7 a.m.) is now 8.7 cents per kWh, the mid-peak rate (7 a.m.-11 a.m. and 5 p.m.-7 p.m.) is 13.2 cents per kWh, and the on-peak charge (11 a.m.-5 p.m.) is now 18 cents per kWh

Halifax tips the scales in the other direction at 15 cents/kWh. The most expensive city in North America is, unsurprisingly, New York City at 22.57 cents/kWh. But overall, Canadians enjoy a relatively breezy national average of 11.85 cents/kWh while Americans pay an average of 13.56 cents/kWh.

Not sure where you get your data, but after sifting through the smoke and mirrors in my last Hydro One bill, my average cost works out to about 21 cents/kWh. Why? Because the Ontario government in its infinite wisdom, allows Hydro One to show "delivery" as a separate item, and that charge is almost the same as the actual electricity cost. Yes, the average cost of the electricity itself works out to about 12.9 cents/kWh, but for a realistic cost that delivery charge has to be taken into account.

Ontario Electricity Rates Rocket Higher in May

Electricity costs increased another 4% on May 1, 2016. The government blames the latest increase on the recent mild winter which resulted in lower electricity consumption. After raising hydro rates every year for the past 8 years, resulting in a cumulative increase of 140%, the fact that they even feel the need to offer an excuse for this particular rate increase is laughable.

To add insult to injury, previous increases tended to be most concentrated within the on-peak and mid-peak periods. This allowed the government to claim that consumers could help compensate by shifting their consumption to off-peak hours. With the latest rate hikes, the highest percentage of increases went toward off-peak rates, which increased 4.82%, while mid-peak and on-peak rates climbed 3.12% and 2.86%, respectively.

Adjusting rates every 6-months helps to obfuscate the annualized increases so we used the Ontario Energy Board's latest data to calculate annual increases effective May 1 for each of the past 9 years. According to the OEB, the average consumer uses 750 kWh per month with 1/3 of their consumption during off-peak hours and the remaining consumption split between mid-peak and on-peak hours. Note that this chart just shows the electricty portion of the bill. Generally, this is only about 56% of your total bill which also includes distribution, transmission, regulatory fees, etc.

Why is Electricity So Expensive in Ontario?

There are many reasons that the cost of electricity in Ontario is higher than most other jurisdictions in North America. The primary reason is the high feed-in-tariff rates that the government pays for green energy. When the FIT program was first introduced, contracts were signed that agreed to pay 80 cents/kWh for solar power. Current solar power rates range from 27.5 - 38.4 cents/kWh. The more of these contracts that are signed, the higher Ontario's electricity cost will be.

Boondoggle: How Ontario's pursuit of renewable energy broke the province's electricity system
Back in 2010, deep green environmentalist Rick Smith, then head of Environmental Defence Canada, hailed Ontario’s Green Energy and Green Economy Act regime as a cost-free operation that would catapult the province into the big leagues of renewable energy. Through fat subsidies and high prices offered to wind, solar and other renewable industry players, jobs and growth would boom and Ontario would be free of its dirty coal plants. It was the End of Coal, the government said. The birth of a renewable miracle.

Instead of being a worthy model for other nations and states, the province’s green energy megaproject stands as a cautionary tale. Alberta’s NDP government, also under the spell of green activists, should look twice before following its plan to kill coal and turn green.

The promise of maybe hundreds of thousands of renewable energy jobs was also a fantasy; today, nobody can say where the jobs are, mainly because few new permanent jobs exist.

Instead of boosting Ontario’s economy and the health of its citizens, the province has created an incoherent electricity industry that many say threatens the viability of key industries.

Ontario’s Society of Professional Engineers has issued more than half a dozen critical reports on the Liberals’ tendency to let green talk and politics override sound policy. Instead of following the expert advice of engineers and people who understand the intricacies of electricity production and distribution, the government took to issuing directives right out the Premier’s office.
