The decreased number of South Purcell Mountain Caribou is a wake-up call to what’s happening to wildlife in our region.
That from Wildsight’s John Bergenske. The most recent census shows the Purcell herd is down to three females and one male compared to sixteen when the last count was done. Bergenske says a full recovery program needs to be put into place.

An article from a few years ago showing how risky it is to relocate these animals.

Interesting. When I was flying up north the 'natives' were chartering planes and shooting Caribou like there's no tomorrow.
Flying back the skin wrapped around all the meat, 30-40 per load.
I remember flying over huge herds, 100's and 100's, and after a couple of weeks: almost none.

The massive herds would have been migrating, though, so wouldn't that also have had something to do with why they were no longer there?
That said, it's always interesting when people suggest there's a genetic component to conservation.

lots of caribou out in the sugar lake greenbusch area and nelson park mountain areas above mable lake etc
there would still be lots in the area the indians are complaining about if they would quit poaching 24/7/365 and obey conservations laws like the rest of us

Nope, you read correctly from the other forum members it is the natives that are responsible for wiping out the caribou as well as the buffalo and the salmon. Invasive industries like mining and logging have nothing to do with the rapid habitat loss of the Caribou. The fact that these species populations started to rapidly decline with colonial settlement is a pure coincidence.
