Russian plane to snap photos over Canada?

Postby averagejoe » Jun 25th, 2012, 3:11 pm

Can this happen?

If a plane bearing the red star of the Russian air force entered our airspace 30 years ago, Canadian jetfighters would have scrambled to intercept it. NORAD would have watched closely and NATO's planes in Europe might have been put on alert.

This week, a Russian military plane will spend three days as a guest of this country. Members of the Canadian Armed Forces will escort the unarmed Russian Tupolev TU-154M, acting as friendly hosts.

The Russians may use video, regular cameras, infrared sensors and even a form of radar as they pass over our cities, military bases, transport hubs and industrial sites.

Canada has done it so why not?

For reasons of safety, security and compliance, Canadian military personnel will escort the Russian aircraft at all times.

Seriously? You don't read up on what you post?

Nevil Hunt received that information from a site he linked to:

Canada has exercised its treaty rights by having previously conducted a number of observation flights over several states, including Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, the Russian Federation, and Ukraine.

Seriously? This treaty has been in place over 10 years with more then 500 flights being completed.

So you have no problem with other countries taking pictures of our military bases?

Not as long as we have pictures of theirs. Besides I am sure satellite pictures are just as good, if not better.

I'm sure we could stand up to the Russian military.

If I'm reading it right - these are the only refueling airports available. So won't see this plane in Kelowna.

Just leave a few crates of vodka and whiskey on the road, they'll stop and drink it all. Russian armies fight well on their own soil, but extremely poorly on foreign soil. Ask the Finns about that one.
The problems we face today are there because the people who work for a living are now outnumbered by those who vote for a living.

Yes, I have paid homage personally to those Finns who fought in the Winter War.

According to the links from what you posted:

Aircraft: Observation aircraft may be provided by either the observing Party or by the observed Party (the "taxi option"), at the latter's choice. All Open Skies aircraft and sensors must pass specific certification and preflight inspection procedures to ensure that they are compliant with Treaty standards.
