TWO JOES - True story

Post by Ken7 »

WORKING JOE vs. WELFARE JOE

You have two families: "WORKING JOE " vs "WELFARE JOE ". Both families have
two parents, two children, and lives in Canada.

WORKING Joe works in construction, has a Social Insurance Number and makes
$25.00 per hour with taxes deducted.

Welfare Joe does not work, has a Social Insurance Number, and gets paid
$15.00 per hour "without leaving the house".

Ready? Now pay attention...

Working Joe : $25.00 per hour x 40 hours = $1000.00 per week, or $52,000.00
per year.
Now take 30% away for provincial and federal taxes.
Working Joe now has $31,231.00 net.

Welfare Joe : $15.00 per hour x 40 hours = $600.00 per week, or $31,200.00
per year. Welfare Jose pays no taxes. Welfare Joe now has $31,200.00
net.

Working Joe pays medical and dental insurance with limited coverage for his
family at $600.00 per month, or $7,200.00 per year. Working Joe now has
$24,031.00 net.

Welfare Joe has full medical and dental coverage through the Provincial and
local clinics at a cost of $0.00 per year. Welfare Joe still has $31,200.00
net.

Working Joe makes too much money and is not eligible for welfare. Working
Joe pays $500.00 per month for food, or $6,000.00 per year. Working Joe now
has $18,031 net.

Welfare Joe has no documented income and is eligible for welfare. Welfare
Joe still has $31,200.00 net.

Working Joe pays rent of $1,200.00 per month, or $14,400.00 per year.
Working Joe now has $9,631.00 net.

Welfare Joe receives a $500.00 per month federal rent subsidy. Welfare Joe
pays out that $500.00 per month, or $6,000.00 per year. Welfare Joe still
has $31,200.00 net.

Working Joe pays $200.00 per month, or $2,400.00 for auto insurance. Working
Joe now has $7,231.00 net.

Welfare Joe says, "We don't need no stinkin' insurance!" and still has
$31,200.00 net.

Working Joe has to make his $7,231.00 stretch to pay utilities, gasoline,
etc.

Welfare Joe has to make his $31,200.00 stretch to pay utilities, buy gas,
prepaid cell phone card, (alcohol/cigarettes) and play at the Casino.

Working Joe now works overtime on Saturdays or gets a part time job after
work.

Welfare Joe has nights and weekends off to enjoy with his family & friends.

Working Joe and Welfare Joe's children attend the same school.
Working Joe pays for his children's lunches while Welfare Joe's children get
a government sponsored lunch.
Working Joe's children go home after school, while Welfare Joe's children
have an after school ESL program provided free.

Working Joe and Welfare Joe both enjoy the same police and fire services,
but working Joe paid for them with his taxes and Welfare Joe did not.

Do you get it, now?

$600 a month for working joes medical and dental is a little high to me.
You know whats really sad there are sooo many people out there living on susidized rent when they shouldnt be, I think its a big problem that undermines the system itself.

Welfare pays 15 dollars a hour?

http://www.eia.gov.bc.ca/mhr/hardship.htm

Dream on. A parent with two kids gets $672.08 for food and clothing and whatever else - and $660 max for rent

Total per month - 1332.08
Total hourly wage "per month" - $8.32 /hour

Single guy on welfare gets $235 for food and clothing and $375 for rent.

Total per month - $610.00
Total hourly wage "per month" - $3.81/hour

Yeah those guys on welfare are living high on the hog on skid row! Sign me up!

Take your copy and paste chain email junk elsewhere. I also posted this on the HST thread where this "true story" was originally posted.

You know what’s even sadder ? There are sooo many people out there who think that the original post here even remotely resembles something close to the truth. Nothing like spreading the ignorance ('cause we just don't have enough of it yet).

I don't know, my parents told me that picking pennies off the bathroom floor for living is better than living off welfare/social assistance/old age security.

But then again, the OP is saying that welfare is awesome!

To this day if I see a penny I pick it up. But for a living? Nawwwww, but I still would not consider welfare unless I was truly at the bottom of my barrel. The rent allowance kills me, who is renting where for that much? And even the Society of HOPE requires incomes to be between $1500 and $2500 to rent one of their Apple Valley Senior's Low income units.

yes, the numbers are hilarious.

What you have to remember is that they're coming from politicians and bureaucrats that are trying to find a way to pad their own salaries and pensions.

Prices must have changed in the last ten years. Close to ten years ago I was at the bottom of the barrel (as Queen puts it) I was constantly looking for work in the area I was living, and even other areas in B.C. I was willing to move, the whole nine yards. I was eventually eating once every other day, and I never borrowed from anyone. So it came to me that I had to just do it, apply for welfare. Back then a single person could make 525 a month max, if you're lucky. They didn't have to give you the full 525 though.

They gave me 200 a month for food, and told me to find the rest on my own. Now I was able to eat once a day, yay me. Without rent money, I had to move out of the place I was living at, at the time. (They were great helping me out as long as they did)

I was lucky enough to find a place to live where I could give them 200 a month for food, and work for a room. Finally I hitch hiked here to Kelowna,(with only the clothes on my back) found a full time job learning a trade of sorts, making a low wage, but I still feel rich compared to those days.

I won't speak for other people, but when I had to apply, I was treated like the scum of the earth from the Gov't and my peers. I was in the welfare bum stereotype. I don't like it when people go on there to abuse the system because they're lazy. I am glad that it is in place for people who really need it as I did.

that's a great story - thanks for sharing - and you are right - it's the abusers of the system that give everyone a bad name. It's social programs like this that set Canada apart from most other nations, in that there is a way to help you if you really want help and also want to make an effort to help yourself. You sir are one of the good ones.

@The Green Barbarian

You're welcome, and thank you.

Back then, you were only able to be on welfare for 2 years at a time. After 2 years, you had to wait 5 years just to apply. I'm guessing that was put in place because of the abusers. It shouldn't take 2 years to find a job, especially if you're willing to work anywhere. Then again it wasn't just for people who couldn't find work. It was also for people waiting on approval for disability, and sometimes that can take a very long time.

Shrapnel - I hope you are eating more than once a day now! I couldn't imagine eating only once every other day. I hope I never have to.

LOL yes I'm eating more than once a day. I look back now, and realize that I at least was able to eat once a day, or sometime every second day. Some people don't even get that. I will include that I didn't have to pay taxes, and I was getting a GST cheque every 3 months, which I gave to the people I was living with.

Sometimes I wonder what would have happened if my welfare application wasn't accepted back then.

Having been part of both worlds, welfare and a working stiff, I would rather work and pay taxes.

I know it's a little off topic, but as well as people abusing welfare, some abuse disability too.
