The CEO of a larger corporation gets a bonus at the end of the year.
The executive director of the foodbank gets a medal and her name in the paper, and no respect for the community she serves.
Which job would you rather have?
Though I sort of understand your point Grizzly550, I'm of the mind that it doesn't quite cut it.
If one deserves a medal for what amounts to basically doing their well paid job efficiently, then there are thousands that should be getting one.
If it's because the employer happens to be a foodbank, thus meaning a public service to the unfortunate, then by your reasoning I would submit that all the nursers at the hospital should get one too.
After all they provide a compassionate service toward the unfortunate as well.
There are other examples, I just felt nurses was a good one.
As far as your executives and bonuses goes, I actually feel that those practices should be reigned in somewhat as well, since people who get paid six figures and more per year, should indeed be efficient at what they do, thus the ridiculous earnings in the first place.

Eligibility criteria
To be eligible for this honour, a person must:
Be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada, but need not necessarily reside in Canada;
Have made a significant contribution to a particular province, territory, region or community within Canada, or an achievement abroad that brings credit to Canada; and
Be alive on February 6th, 2012, the 60th anniversary of Her Majesty’s accession to the Throne. The medal can be awarded posthumously, as long as the recipient was alive on that date.
Nomination process
To ensure that a variety of fields of activity are recognized, partner organizations have been invited to nominate candidates from their community or organization for this national honour.
Members of the general public are welcome to contact the offices of members of Parliament, senators, lieutenant governors, territorial commissioners, or provincial and territorial premiers to suggest names of candidates.
Recommendations can also be made for individuals affiliated with non-governmental organizations participating in this program.

Thousands of people ARE getting an award. 60,000 people will get them in the next 6 months. In reality, telling the grandkids you were 1 of 60,000 to recieve a special award might not exactly be bragging rights.
BUT I stand by my opionion that Ms. Lavers has done more than just her job. There is something else she has done which has set her apart. Olympians, and cancer researchers are among the other 60 recipients so far. I just don't think they tossed one her way only because she works at the foodbank.

Grizzly550 wrote:Wow, that comment is all class. With your attitude towards the good in our community, I really doubt your claim of being anything "special".
I don't know the woman, or have anything to do with the foodbank, but I'm not going to minimize anyone's contributions to help people in need. There is NO reason to abuse someone for receiving an award. The recipients of these awards did not sign the paperwork creating the award or authorizing the spending. Consider where you are placing the blame. These people bust their asses volunteering and making a difference. Its distrurbing of you to try to take away the slight, and probably only, recognition they will see.
Show some class, be proud that someone from our community is recognized for the contribution she has made to make Kelowna a better place for everyone.
Awww, fercrissakes. Get off yer high horse. The article said she got the award because she ran the food bank. That's it. I do think it is rather unbalanced that someone who runs a place to feed the poor and the homeless makes so much money, though. If a person donates cash to the food bank, does it end up in her pocket instead of in some poverty-striken person's tummy? ? How many food banks are there across Canada? Did all the people running food banks in Canada get the award? Or just her? Why just her then? How did she get nominated? Why was she singled out? I didn't see any call for nominations from the community or even any mention of anything to do with these damn medals - did you?
How come Olympic athletes get the medals? They may be more special but the certainly aren't representative of ordinary Canadians. And IMO they are nothing special, either. But that is just me and my opinion about all things Olympic.
You may not think I am special but I do. Over 50 years of various volunteering should net me something, I'd think. Nobody paid me upwards of $100,000 to help people where I live. And I have yet to call down anyone who volunteers for the betterment of their community and who contributes to the underside of the fabric of life here. What do YOU do as a volunteer?

Seems the cost of this celebration keeps climbing with every news release.

I wonder if that includes the medals, or is in addition to?
Amusing, as well as hypocritical, that the Quebecers are complaining, yet they had no problems blowing through 100 million to celebrate Quebec City's 400th anniversary, at the peak of the recession no less. Bunch of twits.
@Grizzly550 - It's certainly your right to hang on to that opinion, but I'd be much more comfortable having some concrete evidence, of services rendered above and beyond the call of duty, beyond your just hoping that that is the case.
If the medal is simply for doing the job, then I would view it as a bad precedent, after factoring in the more than ample remuneration that comes with the position.
On this topic I tend to lean more along GF's line of thinking.
