No , that's not it at all. What public safety concern could be raised by taking an escorted patient out for several hours to get an ice cream cone, coffee or to feed the ducks? No, The stated thread concern was the use of resources spent on this guy. With a little bit of reading it turns out this happens all the time, more accurately, "day passes" are part of treatment for institutionalised patients. The facility Li is housed has 260 beds, with a secure wing of 18 beds for people like Li. This is par for the course there but sensationalism (bus beheader, catchy ring hey?) sells stories and the reason we never hear of the other day passes. This thread is born of ignorance.
Our problem is that people are obedient all over the world in the face of poverty and starvation, and war, and cruelty. People are obedient while the jails are full of petty thieves, while the grand thieves are running the country. That's our problem.

I think it's tragic that this gruesome event had to happen so someone who,in this land of socialized medical care, could get the help he needs....
What's even more tragic though,is someone from law enforcement to suggest that he is broken beyond repair....

Sometimes you just need to know when to call something for what it is...

What are you saying Trunk? Our medical system is broken down and those who REALLY need care don't get it at the expense of innocent victims?
I'll agree with you. How many people do you deal with,as a representative of the MAG's office that should be a ministry of health concern EVERY DAY.??
I don't think Vincent Lee is any different..Sorry you do. Perhaps it's time to redirect AG dollars back into health care....Atleast those in health care try to help...

So you're saying those in the health care profession don't care and are ineffective? Sorry constable, but I don't believe that at all and I doubt they would either.
I think it's those we elect that have dropped the ball on this one because it's them who controls the purse strings..
Perhaps more money for health care instead of your big juicy raise then? Some people with mental illness do indeed need constant care ,or monitoring as the cops say, but I bet that proper medicine is cheaper than a life in incarceration..
It may even change a few bad attitudes.

I am not saying the people of the health care profession do not care...I never said that and I thank you for NOT putting words in my mouth. As far as my raise is concerned ... you have no clue.
Walk a mile in a cops shoes when it comes to having to deal with EDP persons and how they are seemingly pushed through a health care system that is broken and has NO WAY SHAPE OR FORM of helping them in its current state, then come and talk or compare stories.

I think cops may be becoming as unpopular as teachers and will be feeling the public sentiment more and more as the cops mistakes seem to be getting bigger and bigger.
Everybody who hates teachers is jealous of their holidays and doesn't give a rats ass about the tough job they have and the stress etc.
Now its the cops sneaking through a big pay raise while performance is being questioned more and more.
The general public is getting a little annoyed.

What the general public doesnt seem to understand with the RCMP is we have no union and or representatives to push for more wages or raises. Its not the average member who should be blammed for this its the fact that the Treasury Board sits back and lets other police agencies pull ahead of their wages and to stay competative the treasury board has to adjust the pay. All that aside..the raise is a farse because as they hand out an increase they pull back on pension contribution so what it actually works out to be is each member is going to make less per month after the raise. To all thoughs who doubt or complain....do some research before you make a silly comment.

I think the two don't really compare but, the public have a right to get annoyed at whomever they want if that particular "whomever" is being paid from the public purse....AND its as natural as complaining about the weather.
There is no doubt that our helthcare system could use more money to be able to effectively care for people with mental illnesses and if they had it, stuff like this would still happen, but not nearly as often and at least people in health care advocate for the sick individuals rights to be well......
You, Trunk, advocate for prolonged incarceration at a greater cost to the public IMO, and as a member of the public,I have a right to object....Publicly.
