You're right. The difference is in whether he understood the gravity of what he was doing or not. Considering that he decided to flee the country right after the incident shows that he was probably very aware of the consequences.
But instead of just killing him off or committing him to lifetime imprisonment I think he and others like him should be forever under observation to see what it is that brings someone to act in this manner. He wanted attention, give it to him, only for a purpose this time.[quote]
I concur with this statement completely, however there is no reason why this could not be accomplished in a place such as the nice and lonely segregation wing of the Special Handling Unit in Quebec.[quote]
What's about lobotomia? Like.. we could use him to help medecine.

Lobotomies were a fad of the 50's and have been prety much fully discredited as a valid method of treatment. Neither have we learned much form the use of these procedures other than that the prefrontal cortex is much more complex than to start poking ice picks through it:

I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy.

:sunshine: We may have a death sentence for Magnotta!!! .... Imagine!! In Los Angeles... they found a dismembered corpse 4-5 months ago, but no suspects in regards to it. And guess what? Magnotta was in Los Angeles when the killing happened!!!
I hope it's the same guy that killed both. The USA will take care of him better that we would ever do in Canada!

Thank-you Lore for the heads-up, but I think I'd rather watch the hockey game (or paint dry) than this nutbar.

Just watched it (on Global Toronto via satellite TV). Quite interesting - in a macabre sort of way. Unfortunately, the twisted little creep is going to get exactly what he wants with the media coverage his trial will receive. After that, though, we can lock him away into obscurity and let him go nuts being ignored (how often does anyone hear from Bernado?)

Rarely, if ever. (Mind you, there's still lots of talk & media attention back in St. Catharines, but that's the local area.) Karla, on the other hand... My point being, they can still attract attention from behind bars, if they really want to (or if the media decides to print every little going-on). Unfortunately.
Wonder if there will eventually be a book or movie? Probably, especially if other murders are linked to him. :[

Well it's been confirmed that the body parts mailed to two Lower Mainland schools belonged to Jun Lin.

Hands and feet mailed to two Vancouver schools and political parties in Ottawa all belong to a Chinese student whose dismembered torso was found stuffed in a suitcase and dumped in the trash in Montreal, police confirmed Wednesday.
The news came as German officials said that Luka Rocco Magnotta, who is suspected of killing and dismembering Chinese student Jun Lin, is closer to being extradited back to Canada.

Montreal detectives had been sure the body parts mailed across the country belonged to Lin, the victim of one of Canada's most gruesome slayings, but were waiting for confirmation by laboratory analysis.
"All the body parts that were found, the torso in Montreal, the foot and hand in Ottawa, the foot and hand in Vancouver, are from the same body, that of Mr. Lin," Cmdr. Ian Lafreniere, a Montreal police spokesman, said in an interview Wednesday evening.
"We've had official confirmation with the arrival of DNA test results, and we have also validated this though the presence of Mr. Lin's parents in Montreal."
The 33-year-old victim's head has still not been found and police have made its recovery a priority so the family can have some measure of closure.
Magnotta, a 29-year-old porn actor and escort, is now awaiting extradition to face charges of first-degree murder in Lin's death, which grabbed worldwide headlines.
Magnotta was arrested last week in Germany after an international manhunt when he was spotted by an employee at an Internet cafe in Berlin.
Lafreniere said police are now working to establish a timeline on Magnotta's whereabouts.
"It's usually pretty simple but this time we are dealing with a suspect who travelled under different identities," he said, noting Magnotta maintained 70 Facebook pages and 20 websites. "There is a lot of information and a lot of research to do."
A candlelight vigil is planned for Thursday in Montreal to honour Lin, a well-liked computer science and engineering student at Concordia University.
Lin's torso was found May 29 after a janitor at a Montreal apartment building became suspicious of a suitcase left behind after garbage pickup and opened it.
On the same day, a foot arrived in a package delivered to the Conservative Party of Canada in Ottawa and a hand was intercepted at a Canada Post warehouse in the same city before it was delivered to the Liberals.
The other body parts arrived at the Vancouver schools about a week later.
Detectives are also investigating a video that was posted online, which allegedly shows Lin's killing.
Meanwhile, German authorities say a Berlin court has ordered Magnotta to be held in pre-extradition custody as his likely return to Canada edges closer.
Berlin state court spokesman Tobias Kaehne said Wednesday the court decided at the end of last week that there was enough evidence to keep Magnotta behind bars pending extradition.
"That means that he must now remain in custody until a possible extradition to Canada," he said.
Magnotta and his lawyer had to be informed of the decision before it could be announced to the public.
Berlin state prosecutors now must formally request the German justice and foreign ministries to sign off on the extradition, said prosecutors' spokesman Martin Steltner.
"We hope it will go quickly," he said.
Magnotta has said he will not fight extradition, though it is still possible for his lawyer to raise objections.
Evelyn Ascher, Magnotta's court-appointed lawyer, has declined comment.
Even if the extradition is uncontested, authorities say it could still be up to two weeks before they are finally able to return Magnotta to Canada where he faces charges of murder, defiling a corpse and using the mail system for delivering "obscene, indecent, immoral or scurrilous" material.

Criticism may not be agreeable, but it is necessary. It fulfills the same function as pain in the human body. It calls attention to an unhealthy state of things.

Luka Magnotta pleads not guilty in body parts case

Luka Magnotta pleaded not guilty to five charges, including first-degree murder, in connection with the killing of a Concordia University student, during a court appearance in Montreal on Tuesday.
Magnotta appeared in court via video conference, one day after he was extradited from Germany to Canada.
Montreal police say Magnotta, 29, is the chief suspect in the grisly killing of Jun Lin, a 33-year-old Chinese national whose torso was found in a suitcase in the garbage behind a Montreal apartment building last month.
Police said parts of Lin's body were mailed to federal political offices as well as two Vancouver schools. They also believe that his murder was videotaped and posted on the Internet.
Magnotta was the subject of a massive international manhunt until he was apprehended in Berlin earlier this month.
Magnotta entered his pleas through his lawyer, Pierre Panaccio. On screen, Magnotta could be seen next to a guard.
Before his client was led back to detention, Panaccio told Magnotta that they could speak about the case later in the day.
"If you wish to call me at home tonight, I'd be pleased to talk about this," Panaccio told Magnotta.
"OK," Magnotta replied.
Tuesday's proceedings lasted only a few minutes.
Magnotta will next appear in court, again via video link, on Thursday, when lawyers are to discuss a motion to have him undergo a psychiatric evaluation.
Crown prosecutor Louis Bouthillier, who has tried murder cases in Montreal for 15 years, would not discuss his case against Magnotta, saying there was still evidence to be disclosed to the defence.
Speaking to reporters after Tuesday's proceedings, Bouthillier dismissed concerns that the case would pose particular difficulty to a jury.
"Juries have been handling tough matters in this country for hundreds of years, and I fail to see why they could not handle the matter in this case," Bouthillier said. "I'm sure it's going to be a difficult case, but they're all difficult cases when you speak of murder."
Authorities opted to limit Magnotta's court appearance to a video meeting after discussing the extensive security measures an in-person appearance would require, reported CTV's Montreal Bureau Chief Genevieve Beauchemin.
Magnotta, originally from Scarborough, Ont., first fled to Paris and was captured at an Internet cafe in Berlin several days later, on June 4.
He was held in German police custody until Canada formally requested his extradition.
Magnotta chose not to challenge his extradition -- a move that could have potentially delayed his return to Canada by months or even years.
The little known porn actor and prostitute was brought from Berlin to Montreal's Mirabel Airport on Monday evening aboard a military transport flight under the supervision of six Montreal police officers.
Footage captured by news crews showed Magnotta emerging from the doorway of the Airbus CC-150 Polaris plane, wearing dark pants and a green-coloured, long-sleeved T-shirt. His hair was cut short.
Magnotta was surrounded by four officers as he walked down the stairs to the tarmac, then into a waiting police van while officers stood by with weapons drawn.
Magnotta was then taken, via police convoy, to an undisclosed location.
"Police said they had to use these extraordinary measures because it was unthinkable to imagine this suspect on a commercial flight back to Canada," said Beauchemin.
"There would be other passengers on the plane, there might be stops and perhaps it would be difficult to get one of the airlines to even carry this passenger."
Lin's family is currently in Montreal, and hopes to eventually repatriate his body to their homeland. However, Lin's head is still missing -- a remaining mystery that police hope to solve during interviews with Magnotta.
"On behalf of the family, we'll do everything to get it back," Montreal police Cmdr. Ian Lafreniere told reporters shortly after Magnotta's arrival at the airport.
In an open letter, Lin's family have thanked everyone who offered them assistance and emotional support in Canada.
Helene Di Salvo, who will prosecute the case along with Bouthillier, said she and her co-counsel hope to speak to Lin's family this week, and will keep them apprised of the case as it proceeds.
Magnotta is facing five criminal charges, including first-degree murder, defiling a corpse, publishing an obscene matter, mailing obscene matter and criminally harassing Prime Minister Stephen Harper and other members of Parliament.

Ya, he’s a psychopath all right. It’s too bad our systems failed in identifying and isolating him before this. I can’t see what grounds he would be pleading not guilty on though. It seems pretty obvious he did it (apparently he videotaped himself in the act), and from what I know (I’d have to do a little research to confirm this) he does not satisfy the requirements for a NCRMD (Not Criminally Responsible by way of Mental Disorder) assessment. From what I understand a NCRMD finding requires the presence of significant psychosis and psycopathy and sociopathy are more personality disorders than breaks with reality. This guy was able to arrange and catch flights and pass through borders, and while even those who suffer from psychosis can be calculating there is typically more evidence of paranoia than this guy exhibits. Should be interesting to see what happens next.
