Exactly, Roadster. There are many Christian sects in Canada that wear head coverings (doukhobors, mennonites, etc.), but they never insist on imposing their rules on our legal system.

To kibbs, we are not arguing in favour of a true non-religious secular society like France where niqabs and burkas are banned. Rather, we are saying there is a time and place for everything. The witness box is not the place to keep one's face covered, in my opinion.

Kibbs is just trying to make this a racist thread or has not understood the title well. Either way lots of different religions blend into our communities and always have, thats not a problem here. We dont see churches here blowing up, weddings and funerals being shot at, its really not a problem here but I think kibbs wants to think so for some reason, maybe just because our legal system is good and we know it. Cant change it all for one religion. If it happens we are screwed.

This reminds me of the story from a few years ago where an immigration officer in Edmonton was asking a Muslim woman to remove her veil so he could complete a facial ID. She screamed racism and the guy backed down. Then afterwards, she was laughing and joking in Arabic with her friends about how easy it is to manipulate people in Canada, just by crying "racist". What she didn't realize was that she was overheard by a Canadian special forces guy who spoke Arabic, and exposed their scam. Kibbs, you are being incredibly niaeve.

i agree, in canada exceptions can be made ,if your face had a medical condition that required covering you should be exempt . i believe that even if they are doing it to manipulate our system our supreme court has decided that a minuscule portion of the population can be exempt for religious and cultural reasons, if there is photographic proof of identity, just because you forgive someone does not mean you have to agree with them.the decision does not please everyone but it violates no ones right and it keeps the peace.I believe the peace of the nation supersedes the accused right to expose this woman's face in public when a photo would suffice .these laws were made way before the camera was invented,i don't believe we will ever see a drivers licence with a veil.you might as well put a cartoon of Muhammad there instead.

Based upon the Supreme Court of Canada's ruling, does that now mean that everyone can wear what they want, on the stand?

More women wear the niqab today in Canada than did in Egypt in the 1960s. Same goes for the hijab. Today, 90% of Egyptian women cover their heads.

Kibbs, the thread is about wearing the niqab in a courtroom, not about whether they are sexy or not. Your post only indicates ignorance of the niqab, not tolerance. You can't be this naive, can you?

im just trying to show that when islamic law takes over canada it wont be so bad.i truly think way to big of a deal is made about the decision.when you compare our problem to that of a middle east country we really have a lot to be thankful for and very little to complain about.
