No. Refugees do not get more financial help from the federal government than Canadian pensioners do. A widely circulated email makes this false claim. The email mistakenly includes the one-time start-up payment as part of the monthly payment.

They didn't even get the figures right. A bit outdated, but my 2012 table shows the maximum GIS plus OAP to be $1.278.48/month. Pretty much guaranteed that such a person did NOT pay much income tax if they qualify for that level of GIS, as they wouldn't qualify for that level if they get CPP.

I hate crap misinformation like this. I now automatically assume that a forwarded message with political overtones is bunk (having been sucked in before).
