Interesting Stats from the Last Federal Election

Post by Glacier »

I was looking into how individual polling stations voted in 2011, and discovered a few interesting things. First of all, I found this map from the election before.

I have the information to update this map for the 2011 election, but Google tells me that it will cost $300 to do so. Screw that.

I do have the text version, and it is interesting to see that even within the most Conservative of ridings there are enclaves of non-Conservatives. For example, in Prince George - Peace River, a huge conservative riding where 24% of the communities voted 80% or more in favour of the Conservatives, you also find For Ware, which voted 94% against the Conservatives.

Closer to home, the only community in the Kelowna riding that did not vote more than 50% in favour of the Conservatives was Joe Rich at 49% (though a number of the Kelowna polling stations were also under the 50% mark). It seems that reservations in the Okanagan are largely conservative when compared to reservations in the Cariboo and Peace River areas. In the Cariboo, the most conservative polling stations are often right beside the least conservative polling stations. for example: Chilco vs. Nemaiah Valley, Dog Creek vs. Alkali Lake, Big Creek vs. Alexis Creek, etc.

A sample of how various communities in the Kelowna riding voted were:
    Ellison at 67% conservative
Duck Lake 7 (reservation) at 65%
    Oyama at 58%
    Carrs at 57%
    Winfield at 57%
    Kelowna at 57%
    Okanagan Centre at 55%
    Joe Rich at 49%
Okanagan- Coquahalla:
    Logan Lake at 60% conservative
    Peachland at 56%
    Merritt at 56%
    Summerland at 52%
    Penticton 1 (reservation) at 51%
    Penticton at 49%
    Naramata at 39%

North Okanagan:
    Sorrento at 69%
    Sicamous at 62%
    Salmon Arm at 55%
    Enderby at 54%
    Silverstar at 54%
    Vernon at 51%
    Cherryville at 38%
    Enderby 2 -- Salmon River 1 (reservation) at 25%

Southern Interior:
    Osoyoos at 63%
    Rock Creek at 57%
    Beaverdell at 51%
    Princeton at 48%
    Cawston at 45%
    Grand Forks at 43%
    Midway at 41%
    Trail at 39%
    Castlegar at 34%
    Kaslo at 31%
    Hedley at 28%
    Nelson at 23%
    Slocan Valley at 19%
    Slocan at 15%
    Vallican at 10%

Kamloops-Cariboo:
    Loon Lake at 86%
    Kamloops at 69%
    70 Mile House at 68%
    Barriere at 63%
    Clinton at 61%
    108 Mile Ranch at 60%
    Kamloops 5 (reservation) at 55%
    Blue River at 53%
    Valemount at 49%
    Pinantan Lake at 41%

Cariboo- Prince George:
Chilco at 83% (the highest in the riding)
    Wells at 27%
Nemaiah Valley at 11% (the lowest in the riding and right next door to Chilco)
Prince George - Peace River:
    Prespatou at 94%
    Fort St John at 70%
    Dawson Creek at 64%
    Prince George at 50%

Love how the closer you get into the heart of true epic southern interior wilderness, the more the support for the Conservatives drops off.

It is interestiing, though not surprising, that Naramata is the least conservative place in the Okanagan valley. I'm actually quite surpised that Kamloops is so conservative while Prince George is not.

Since Oliver is adjacent to a high profile reservation, I am curious if it was accidently omitted or confused with Osoyoos . The band actually is tied closer to Oliver than Osoyoos.

The OIB was counted under Oliver. The results were 37 NDP votes, 36 Conservative votes, 11 Green votes, and 4 Liberal votes. With only 41% of the vote, this was the worst showing for the Conservatives in any of the 21 Oliver polling stations. The Conservatives won 18 of the other 20 polls.

BTW, of the 226 Kelowna polling stations, 212 voted in favour of the Conservatives, and 14 voted NDP. This is a marked improvement for the NDP who only managed to win one poll the election before. The Conservatives gained the two polls the Greens had won in 2008, however.
