Strahl steps down!!

Post by flamingfingers »

How is it even feasible that the chair of the Security Intelligence Review Committee could be allowed to register as a lobbyist for Enbridge? This is ridiculous! Did he and Harper did not think that he could be 'caught' straddling lines that are clearly marked? I guess by his stepping down as chair indicated where his main interest lies.

Strahl steps down as spy watchdog

The federal NDP say it is time for the federal government to make changes after a former Conservative MP steps down as chair of the Security Intelligence Review Committee.

Nathan Cullen expressed his concerns after it was revealed Chuck Strahl was also a lobbyist for oil company Enbridge.
“It’s unfortunate that things only change when people get caught. But I think at the end of the day, Mr. Strahl did the right thing. I don’t think there was another choice. It was a pretty obvious conflict of interest, to be the watchdog of Canada’s spy agency, while at the same time, lobbying for oil companies, some of them owned by the Chinese government.”
Cullen says the Prime Minister must now change the rules to prevent this from happening again.

“And if the rules allow for this to go on then we have to change the rules because it just seems like common sense that while being the chair of the watchdog for Canada’s spy agency shouldn’t allow you at the same time to lobby for companies, particularly foreign owned companies, and companies that, that same spy agency is involved in and briefing on a regular basis.”

He also questions the timing of the announcement saying government doesn’t release anything it is proud of late on a Friday.
Strahl in a letter announcing he was stepping down said Canada’s Ethics Commissioner found no wrong doing with his actions.

There is still a vacant Senate seat from BC. It has been vacant for a couple of years. Maybe Chucker is going to the Senate to join other deep political thinkers from BC, like Nancy Greene.
