Man who beheaded Greyhound passenger granted unescorted trip

WINNIPEG (NEWS1130) – A man who beheaded a fellow passenger on a Greyhound bus in Manitoba has been granted the right to leave his mental hospital without an escort.

The Criminal Code Review Board is allowing Vince LI unsupervised outings from the Selkirk Mental Health Centre into the nearby city of Selkirk. The outings are to start at 30 minutes and increase to full-day trips.

Until now, Li has only been allowed to leave the hospital with security guards or staff members.

Li is also allowed to visit Lockport, Winnipeg and area beaches, but those outings must continue to be supervised.

He was found not criminally responsible for stabbing and beheading Tim McLean, a young carnival worker, on a bus in July 2008.

Do people realize this man was "out in the public" for years and years without a problem?

He is on his med's. He will be on his med's for life and supervised for life. He would have to be off meds for weeks before any symptoms started to show up. Will it make you feel better (revenge) to put a diseased man in a dark cage for the rest of his life because his sickness made him do something horrible that he had no control over? Do people realize how many people just like him are walking around Kelowna right now - but on their med's? Maybe we should lock up everyone with mental illness, all forms, "just incase?"

This man deserves our help. He is the victim as much as the beheaded person is. Neither get their lives back, but at least one person's quality of life can be saved.

If you do not understand mental illness then keep the ridiculous "screwed up justice system" comments to yourself perhaps?

This man did not commit any crime. He has been absolved of all charges and is under treatment by professionals who know a know a substantial amount more about mental illness than armchair justice criticizers spoon fed by right wing bloggers.
