Fuel up to $1.60?
Fuel is over $1.50 in Montreal this morning, and is expected to increase over $1.60.
Do you think we'll see the same here in BC?
Ironic when we have so much oil in red plate country next door. lol

According to http://www.bcgasprices.com
Low price Prince George @ $1.299…. high price Coquitlam @ $1.546
Low price Prince George @ $1.299…. high price Coquitlam @ $1.546

And adding salt to the injury ... we don't even get cars here that can even come close to MPG in other parts of the world ... sigh.

Just came back from Italy, its $2.60 a litre there. Rented a fiat panda with a 1.2 litre motor and it was perfect for 2 people. You do not see gas guzzlers in Italy like you see here.

The Fiat 500 is available in Canada. It has a 1.4l engine and gets 48mpg, which is rather impressive. You won't find a Panda here just because the market won't buy enough of them to warrant it. That said, 48mpg is rather impressive for a vehicle in North America. The Panda by comparison gets 52mpg.
The Prius C (compact, but bigger than the Panda) is rated at 64mpg with a 1.5l engine, although it's a hybrid (the "hybrid" rating is 84mpg).
The Yaris is rated for about 74mpg.
It's not like we don't have any options in this country for fuel-efficient vehicles.
(all MPG ratings in imperial units, not US - as the Panda will only have an imperial rating)

I think it's time to get a Tesla. Take that gas companies.
P.S. bcgasprices.com is so yesterday. It tells you what the price is today, but it has no way of predicting the price tomorrow. For that, you must use http://tomorrowsgaspricetoday.com/.
Today, gas prices in Kelowna are 139.9;
one year ago they were 125.9;
two years they were 130.9.
There is a 70% probability of gas prices going up in the next 7 days. Prices are expected to rise 3 days from now.

Impressive? Doesn't take much for you does it? ;)
The Fiat 500 is available here, with one engine option ...
Canada Fiat 500:
1.4L @ 6.7L/100km city and 5.2L/100km hwy
Europe Fiat 500:
1.2L @ 6.4L/100km city and 4.3L/100km hwy
1.3L diesel @ 4.7L/100km city and 3.1L/100km hwy
36Drew wrote:You won't find a Panda here just because the market won't buy enough of them to warrant it.
Curious at what price point fuel needs to hit until we realize the pickle we've put ourselves in becomes a reality?
36Drew wrote:That said, 48mpg is rather impressive for a vehicle in North America.
Which is my point, what is considered efficient here is not by global standards.
36Drew wrote:It's not like we don't have any options in this country for fuel-efficient vehicles.
Our options are limited, which again, was my point.

VW Canada:
Golf 1.8L TSI @ 8.1L/100km city and 5.6L/100km hwy
Golf 2.0L TDI @ 6.7L/100km city and 4.6L/100km hwy
Jetta 1.4L TSI Hybrid @ 4.5L/100km city and 4.2L/100km hwy
VW Europe:
Golf 1.2L TSI @ 6.1L/100km city and 4.2L/100km hwy
Golf 1.4L TSI @ 6.7L/100km city and 4.3L/100km hwy
Golf 1.6L TDI @ 4.5L/100km city and 3.4L/100km hwy
Polo 1.4L TDI @ 4.0L/100km city and 2.6L/100km hwy
plus they also have options for natural gas engines as well as all electric engines.
Toyota Canada:
Yaris 1.5L @ 6.6L/100km city and 5.2L/100km hwy
Prius C @ 3.6L/100km city and 4.0L/100km hwy
Toyota Europe:
Yaris 1.0L @ 5.7L/100km city and 4.2L/100km hwy
Yaris 1.3L @ 6.8L/100km city and 4.5L/100km hwy
Yaris 1.4L diesel @ 4.8L/100km city and 3.5L/100km hwy
Yaris Hybrid @ 3.1L/100km city and 3.5L/100km hwy
Pretty significant difference if you ask me.
Granted, the Europeans have had decades worth of a head start on high fuel prices while we laughed at them, seems the tables are turning ;)

Re: Fuel up to $1.60?
I agree with you Dizzy1 about getting better fuel economy vehicles, the downside of the smaller engines is once you get more weight in vehicle. The fuel economy drops off fast since engine has to work much harder to keep highway speeds.
For a single person these small engine vehicles would be great.
Even my own vehicle I've noticed a small drop with 2 people add the luggage it drops more, because engine has to work that much harder to maintain highway speeds. When I carpool 4 around town/work Wow it drops big time.

Re: Fuel up to $1.60?
To be honest, both my car and the wife's doesn't see much of an increase when loaded up, in fact both of our cars are seeing a bit better MPG then advertised on average. But yes, the more you load up a car the more the engine has to work and you will see an increase in MPG, also it depends on one's driving style.
Interestingly, in Germany where one has to take driving school to get their license, one part of the curriculum is to drive in an efficient manner such as accelerating, braking, shift points, etc. and is part of the testing process as well.

For myself it's only really noticeable once 4 large adults over a 2 week carpool, if my engine was between 1.0 L to 1.6 L I'm sure it would very noticeable.

Would it be as big of a difference that your mileage would be (on average) more than a larger more thirsty engine? But as you pointed it out, smaller engines aren't for everyone, but it would be nice to at least have those options, even if one would have to do a factory order.

Just myself: Hwy I get 5.13L/100 Km, city drops to 6.14L/100 Km
Carpooling 4 adults + stuff (only city): 7.1L/100 Km
I'm not complaining, compared to my former vehicle at 11.3L/100 Km highway I'm laughing.

Re: Fuel up to $1.60?
My car is rated at 9.0L/100km city and 5.5L/100km hwy ... when I'm loaded down I'll get about 9.5L/100km city and about 5.7L/100km hwy, when its just me or the two of us, I have gotten it down to about 8.5L/100km city and about 4.9L/100km on the highway. The wifes car is rated at 6.7L/100km city and 4.6L/100km hwy ... when she's loaded down, she'll get about 7.0L/100km city and 4.8L/100km hwy ... if its just us, she'll get about 6.5L/100km city and 4.3L/100km hwy ... but on average, we're both pretty well spot on the actual rating which is a pleasant surprise.
Just as comparison with my car, one of the engine options for the same model in Europe I could get 5.2L/100km city and 3.5L/100km hwy.
My summer car which I just sold got about 13.2L/100km city and 8.8L/100km hwy but I didn't even come close to that LOL!
