One in five high school students surveyed say they received a sext of someone that was forwarded to them by someone else, with the practice more common in higher grades.

That is one of the results from a survey of young Canadians released today that may worry their parents when it comes to sexting and online pornography, which looks to be on the rise among teens compared to the results of a 2005 study.

But this new survey might also be reassuring for parents on the question of internet privacy, as it appears that teens are increasingly aware of how to control access to their social media sites

In what is billed as the largest and most comprehensive study of internet use by young Canadians, the Ottawa-based group MediaSmarts found that 32 per cent of boys in grades 7-11 say they have received a “sext” -- which they define as "sexy, nude or partially nude photos" -- created by the sender, as have 17 per cent of teenage girls.

Overall, eight per cent of the students said they have sent a sext of themselves, with the proportion rising in tandem with the grade number.

The study, called “Sexuality and Romantic Relationships in the Digital Age,” asked 3,158 grade 7-11 students questions about sexting and pornography, and a total of 5,436 students in grades 4-11, completed the rest of the survey. The participants were recruited through schools and school boards across Canada.

Technically, they are. They're old enough to know and comprehend consequences. If you're under 18, take a nude picture of yourself and send it to someone, you are making and distributing child porn.

The laws aren't there to criminalize them, but to protect those being victimized.

it would be horrid to think that another 20% of the kids are victimized as well.

when i was in highschool, maybe 20% had drank alcohol. seeing these stats boggles the mind.

Really? You think if you had the technology you wouldn't be taking some risque photos of yourself (or if not you, at least 20% of those you knew)? I'm sure I probably would have. Its a time of sexual angst, experimentation, discovery... frustration. The only difference is the tech really, not the stat.

20% drank alcohol? I think not. Maybe 20% didn't. That, I would believe.

I think times weren't more innocent in the past. We just didn't have the "reporting" to shove it down our throats every day.

myself, i was brought up to value my creations, certainly to be fully responsible for my creations.

the 20% figure is an average as you can see, from 7 - 11, at senior year the boys i think top out at 32%, and girls 20%.

that's 1 in 6 girls is a porn producer, and one third of boys. all possibly consciously produced and/or distributed child pornography. where did they learn to do this? who facilitated them doing this? who allowed them to do this?

I would be interested in your answers to those questions since I don't completely understand where you're trying to go with this thread.
