Canada has a mandatory 2-week vacation period for the first five years, after that it is bumped up to 3 weeks' vacation time. Funny thing, I haven't been on a vacation since 2006; we use up a good chunk of our vacation time on the office closure over the Christmas holidays, and the rest is a day here a couple days there.

What is a vacation like again?

Your post mentioning "2-week vacation period for the first five years, after that it is bumped up to 3 weeks" got me wondering so found this site. Quite interesting.

I recall when I used to get only 2 weeks vacation. I used to go into a deep dark funk when it was over. Not sure why we copied the American model, Europe's makes much more sense both economically and in terms of personal well being.

What do you mean the "American model" ? The US has NO mandatory vacation.

"Why can't they be like BC........ with a balanced budget?"

Well, BC has a balanced budget, but when that was announced at the end of the last fiscal year, it was also revealed that BC had increased public debt by about $4 billion. That was money borrowed by BC Hydro and ICBC and BC Ferries. Some of it was sent back to the lone shareholder of those crown corporations, the BC provincial government. So in reality, the BC government siphoned off about $4 Billion from its assets, but under the new definitions, that doesn't count as deficit. Just as "public debt". Still has to be paid off by the public. This way, Christy can smile and say we have a balanced budget. We really don't.

I get about 26 days. I spread it out throughout the year. A week in November, a fews days around Christmas, time at Spring Break, a day here and there. I love it.
