To be fair, an auxiliary police isn't a rent-a-cop, because you can't "rent" them. That term applies more to security guards.

But what makes it almost worse. An unarmed, volunteer working with the RCMP was shot. That's tragic.

An Auxiliary Constable is an unarmed, unpaid, uniformed RCMP volunteer whose activities are governed under provincial legislation. RCMP Auxiliary Constables may have peace officer or equivalent status, in accordance to their provincial or territorial statutes.

Were the bullets used for the "non RCMP" person different or something?

Jan. 18 update

The Mounties in Alberta have identified a suspect who was found dead following the shooting of two RCMP officers.

Police say that Shawn Maxwell Rehn, 34, was the person whose body they found in a home on Saturday, not far from the casino where the two officers were shot.

RCMP now releasing the name of the deceased suspect in yesterdays St. Albert shooting that sent two Mounties to hospital.

Constable Derrek Walter Bond has since been released from care.

Constable David Wynn however, is still fighting for his life and is said to be in “grave condition.”

34 year-old Shawn Maxwell Rehn of Edmonton is believed to have shot the officers inside a St. Albert casino while the pair were looking into reports of a stolen vehicle.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response team is looking into the case since Rehn was found dead while surrounded inside an abandoned home just kilometres away from the crime scene.

An autopsy is scheduled for tomorrow to determine cause of death.

A police press conference is scheduled for later this afternoon

Rehn, a resident of the greater Edmonton area, was known to police before Saturday’s shooting.

A small silver lining in this tragedy....this parasitic waste of skin probably put one in his own head rather than face the consequences of what he had done.
At least he can't hurt or kill anyone else now. And my tax dollars won't be wasted on courts and housing and feeding him for life.

The heading doesn't say two RCMP shot. It says more.
As in this isn't the first time.

I hope he makes it.

I believe the auxiliary officer is still considered a member/officer of the RCMP. He just has a different status. He does wear a uniform and can have peace officer status and is therefore called a member of the RCMP. It really doesn't matter because his life is just as valuable and he was there performing RCMP duties.

This is another tragic event and highlights why the police have to be so careful and react quickly when they think it is necessary. They don't even have seconds to think about it.
