NDP oust Mulcair after contentious convention

Post by oneh2obabe »

EDMONTON—Thomas Mulcair is no longer the leader of the New Democrats.

A full 52 per cent of delegates at the NDP’s Edmonton convention voted to seek new leadership for the party after October 2015’s crushing electoral defeat.

Mulcair was thanked for his leadership directly after the vote. The party will have to hold a leadership convention in 2017.

In a speech to delegates before the vote, Mulcair asked the party’s rank and file to “stand with him” in a last-minute appeal to keep his job.

The themes were similar to speeches Mulcair has been giving for months – reducing income inequality, raising corporate taxes and closing tax loopholes, pushing for universal pharmacare and a national childcare system.

“(Canadians) are counting on us to fight for them and stand up to well-connected and powerful interests. We can’t let them down. We can’t get distracted. We have to push forward,” Mulcair told the crowd.

“If you keep standing with me, then together, we will never stop fighting.”

In the end, the stood up for a change in leadership.

Will the new leader be open minded to change or same old... same old.

They may have rejected Mulcair but they wont go far without revamping their manifesto/party platform.

Well Tom, you had a good run, but you had to know this was coming. You were the head of one of the dumbest political parties ever conceived in the history of this great country, and you had to know you were going to take the fall when they once again failed at the polls. You did your best, that much is true, but you were given an unwinnable task. And this is one party that will always look out, not in, when they fail. They will never concede their policies are awful, their ideology backward and wrong, and their message just plain terrible. Someone has to take the blame when failure inevitably arrives for the NDP, and you're that guy. Good luck in your new Liberal career. I wonder who predicted that, a long time ago. Hmmm....

Here's to you Tom:

Good luck buddy.

Mulcair tried to move the party toward the centre and that didn't go over very well with the majority. Look for the NDP to pull a Jenny Kwan style operation now (not a coup since Mulcair is out) and move the party to the left. Far left. Maybe Jenny herself will run for leader??

Looks like they're going to move a little further left from center.

Yeah, they tried to crawl out of the sewer but Avi Lewis and Naomi Klein are going to push them right back in, and cover them with fecal matter. If they win more the 3 seats in the next election it will only be due to the stupidity of the Canadian voter.

Speaking of contentious, I had to hand it to Notley, who got up and slammed morons like Avi Lewis who are pushing this idiotic LEAP nonsense.

With any luck maybe if they move far enough left they'll fall off this flat earth. :D

And that much farther from being electable in this country. The majority of Canadians are quite comfortable with middle of the road politics that is both business friendly promoting job creation and economic growth, while providing support and opportunity for the disadvantaged, marginalized and less fortunate. The NDP will never form federal government in Canada. Of course, the way things are going it will likely be a very long time before the Conservatives do again either.

The NDP shouldn't try to pass itself off as a party for rational people. They should embrace the crazies like Suzuki, the Lewises, Libby Davies and Klein and go back to being the party of wonky gadflies. That's what they're good at.

As for Tom, good riddance. He was just a Liberal in NDP clothing.

Keith Baldrey makes two good points:

The events at #NDP2016 are not good news for the BC NDP as it faces an election campaign a year away. #bcpoli

The fact a modern political party "embraces" anything that has the word "manifesto" in its name is......what?

So even though Mulcair said that he would push the Leap Manifesto if the party wanted him to they booted him out anyway. Just how far left do the rank-in-file want to go?

all you had to do was watch a bit of the convention to see how truly loony the backbone of the NDP are. It makes you wonder how they are able to stay so disconnected from the real world, even with social media and the internet so easily accessible. It was high comedy though to watch some of the screeching and yelling. The NDP sure knows how to get emotional, especially about completely useless and really bad ideas.

Three short years ago. How both have fallen. But both had no where to go but down.

The fact that he got booted with 48% support would be more of an indication of how many of the general electorate want to go radical "manifesto" left. Given that the NDP received just under 20% of the popular vote in the last election, and Mulclair received only 48% of his Party's vote based on his willingness to pursue the "manifesto" ideals, simple extrapolation of numbers would seem to point to the fact that only something like 9% of the population of voters are actually stupid enough to think the "manifesto" is worth the paper it is printed on.
