Pretty sad when a person having heart attack is accused of being drunk

Re: Elder dies because of racism
Discuss the cognitive bias of her uncle's treatment, not the race. This is too important to make it about race ONLY. Besides, there are other conditions that are misdiagnosed due to cognitive bias, and race has nothing to do with it.
This is a topic worthy of discussion, I'm glad you changed the title.

If he has a problem with alcohol and is known for it then I can understand how the mistake was made.
If he did not drink then I can understand how racism can fit in this incident.
Misdiagnoses happens everywhere and is not always a race issue.

Diabetics have been mistaken---and fatally so---for being drunk when having an insulin reaction.
There is a spectrum of neurological conditions that are also misdiagnosed as being psychiatric; this too can be fatal.

This is cognitive bias in action right here.
In the medical field, they are taught that when hoofbeats are heard, they are to look for horses, not zebras. Therefore, if a person entertains a personal, cognitive bias, then that person has a difficult time bringing different kinds of horses to mind.

Very interesting, I was not aware of the terminology.
Are you saying that it does or does not exist in the medical field ??

Diabetics can even fail a breathalyzer (and not have had anything to drink). Our healthcare system is top notch but it isn't perfect.

Strokes and heart attacks are different; the man in the article had a stroke. Strokes will most often impact one side of the brain and some symptoms could be slurred speech, an unsteady gait, etc. Therefore, if a person with cognitive bias is the first to reach out to emergency personnel, they may provide incorrect information and set the ball rolling in the wrong direction.
from the article:
According to Papik, staff told her she needed to "deal with him" because he was drunk. They had found him lying on the ground covered in his own urine.
The staff had a cognitive bias that did not allow them to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.
The article does not indicate whether there had been a history of alcohol abuse, so we do not know what contributed to the bias displayed by staff of the home, or the nurses at Aklavik Health Centre.
By the way... what does your mom fishing in Bella Coola have to do with this man's stroke? If you are concerned about your mother suffering a heart attack and being mistaken for drunk, then you should be taking that up with someone other than the contributors to the Castanet Forums.

Re: Inuvialuit woman says uncle's stroke mistaken for drunke
Shes been a emergency room rn for close to 40 years and since shes out of cell rangd i am un able to ask her . To be more clesr what im asking is there any other tests that can rule out drunk .i know all about visible symptonms like sluured speach ect ect .
Even if someone has a history of being drunk , i fail to see how that should be the automatic go to . The reality is no one will.know why the choices made were made .
