LV - ask yourself this: how can we afford NOT to be participators and do what we can to improve the world?

Like it or not, and sometimes I don't, we live in a globalized world, with globalized economies. Maybe 50 years ago it wouldn't have directly affected us if a tin pot dictator in some African or Central Asian country went nuts. But that isn't so today.

What would the shock to the global energy supply chain be if Boko Haram seized control of Nigeria's oil? You could easily see your retirement portfolio take a hit.

That is just one example of a relatively minor issue. What happens if we do not help and the likes of al-Shabbab destroys the economy of Kenya? And so it goes and then we get to the big one: if we do not do what we can to help out with these situations, the refugee problem could overwhelm the EU and cause economic chaos. That would have huge ramifications.

So if you think about world growth and world prosperity as linked to your own, then a few bucks now is a rather wise investment.

And that's without even getting into the moral questions. Nor the security of Canadians if these groups have free rein.

But chief of the defence staff Gen. Jonathan Vance said Wednesday that Canadian troops will be deployed as peacekeepers for no other reason than to help bring peace and stability to another part of the world.

"I reject the notion that this is done simply for political reasons and putting troops in harm's way into risky areas for anything other than the true merits of the value of the use of military force," he said.

He said he wouldn't advise Canada participate in a mission with unnecessary or unmanageable risk.

"But a risky mission that has great potential of success may be a mission that you want to invest in," he said. "And the military, we do risk. We're good at that, if we can mitigate it."

Vance said UN commanders might give Canadian troops specific tasks, but he would "never" let the UN have the last word on when or how Canadian peacekeepers could act. He said he is the one who writes the rules of engagement for Canadian troops, which would continue with a peacekeeping mission.

"I never relinquish Canadian command of those troops," he said. "We have learned a lot since the days of Bosnia and Rwanda and elsewhere. And one of those is you're never out from under Canadian command."

This is to funny now Justin and the rest of his band of morally bankrupt stooges want to join an even bigger gang of morally bankrupt stooges.
The UN is a joke and nothing more than a elite bunch of crooks who receive millions from the more gullible of society.
The only reason our politically uneducated punk PM wants to be a part of the UN is because his man crush to the south Obama told him to.
Yes the UN is doing such good work on the humanitarian front that one of it's distinguished member countries is bombing Syria and lying through it's teeth denying it. Sounds like a organization that Canada should be a part of if your a thought challenged Justin supporter who like him is lacking on facts and relying more on looks and deception instead of meaning and integrity.
It's bad enough Justin is a liberal and a Obama puppet on a string now he wants to be the corrupt UN puppet also, this is sad for Canada and even sadder is his gullible following is buying into it lock stock and barrel.

Better alternative would be to distance himself and Canada from such corruption. He should be calling the UN out on everything that is wrong with it and distancing himself from it. However that's not an option for him because Obama has told him differently.
Sad for Canadians that we have such a shmuck at the helm that thinks it's all about being popular over doing and making the right decisions.

Ah, the old "isolationist" policy.

If we don't help others, why should others help us?

Ignore the bad guys and hope they go away? That worked really well for Chamberlain - didn't it?

We live in an interconnected world, and as I said before - sometimes I don't like that - but that means we can either participate and try to get along and help out, or wind up in an isolation booth like North Korea or...
