Yes indeed. Perhaps a bit of starry eyed naivety, or perhaps a political calculation, or maybe a bit of both. But wasn't going to happen any more than it did in BC when we had a referendum. The Conservatives (omg a use for them!) would have crucified JT and crew in referendum.

We don't want virtually constant Liberal governments. That is precisely what the Fraser Institute argues would happen with PR. The losers in PR would be the NDP and the Conservatives. The Greens and Bloc and mostly the Liberals the winners.

Is that what you want?

No doubt in my mind that the Liberals will pay a political price for backtracking. Remarkable though how short a memory the average voter has IF the economy and they are on the up.

Trudeau's mistake was making the promise in the first place. Not breaking it. FPTP is far from perfect but it has some distinct advantages over the other options. It's simple and straightforward and it's relatively easy to sweep a government out of power and bring in a new government that can fulfill its platform.
