2016 Census Data

Post by Glacier »

Well, Statistics Canada has released the first of the data from the 2016 Census. I saw this map today...

bc_regions - Population Increase 2011-2016.png

Statscan likes to ignore places under 5000 people, so I will do the same here.

Kelowna's population is up 8.6% in 5 years, but that's far from the fastest growing cities. The fastest growing in Canada (over 5,000 people):
1) Warman, SK = 55%
Blackfalds, AB = 48%
Cochrane, AB = 47%
Airdrie, AB = 42%
Shelburne, ON = 39%

For BC:
Tsinstikeptum 9 Indian Reservation = 30%
Greater Vancouver A = 24%
Langford = 20.8%
Whistler = 20.6%
Fernie = 18%

Fastest Shrinking in Canada:
Bonnyville, AB = -13%
Cumberland, Subd. B, NS = -8%
Sainte-Anne-des-Monts, QC = -7%

Fastest Shrinking in BC:
Bulkley-Nechako A = -2.5%
Kitimat = -2.4%
Prince Rupert = -2.3%
Quesnel = -1.3%
Williams Lake = -0.7%
West Vancouver = -0.5%

This is crack for stats nerds such as myself. I've been excitedly awaiting the results of the survey. There are a lot of cool stats actually, including growth by birth vs immigration and comparisons to other G7 nations. I'll have to find some of that to post when I'm not busy.

Of course, there are a couple people on this forum which aren't counted in these results because they're afraid of the government knowing that they are citizens.

Aside from massive infusions of cash from the Feds, it's hard to explain the population growth in the territories. Beautiful they are, but also hellishly expensive places to live.

They do a lot of love making up there. The winters are cold and dark. Visit the materinty wards in August, and you'll know why the fertility rate in Nunavut is triple that of Victoria. It's the only jurisdiction in the western world with a fertility rate above 3.

The Yukon has seen a boom in mining, though with a change in government last year, will probably see much slower growth over the next five years.

P.S. Notice that the NWT saw the slowest growth in Canada.

Here's a good page

http://www12.statcan.gc.ca/census-recen ... CMA&GC=915

Shows population change in the Kelowna Municipal Area and subdivisions.

The graphs and charts are all page elements so I couldn't link the images into this post.

Interesting. Quesnel is the largest city in BC (and 2nd in Canada only to Fort McMurry/Wood Buffalo), at least in terms of the CMA).

I just looked at BC ridings. Those with low income inequalities tended to vote Conservative while those with high income inequality voted Liberal and NDP. (18.8% of people Conservative ridings where in the top and bottom 10% versus 23.0% for Liberal and NDP ridings).

Therefore, we need to increase income inequality to get rid of the conservatives. Make lots of super rich and super poor. Because the ends justifies the means.

Sounds like great advice.
