I think Trump is getting tired of losing and needs a win at all costs.

Here's the big reason why Canada has been working hard with China on trade deals.
I agree with Jimmy tho - Trump wants a "win" and in the general US public eye this is a clear win. Unfortunately that general public doesn't realize that raising tarrifs means prices will go up. Scary really...

Let us take a good look at the lumber industry and come to our own solution. Let us think about stopping all exports of lumber to the USA and use all of that lumber to build houses in our own Great again Canada and think of the jobs this will create and also solve the job situation at the same time. Also it will make our friends across the border happy as they will not have much to complain about us ripping them off. End of problem now on to the next problem please.

To an extent if Trump wants to break the agreements (which have lost again and again in challenge in the past) Canada has the right to then for a time subsidize the mills etc and close all softwood to the states. Prices will rocket along with housing in the states (something I think they want actually for big guys to win while the crash ruins others in the end) and hopefully Canada finds other markets and the US ability to come back and ask "can we have some wood" means we give them leftovers.

I think the US government needs a reminder that they're not the super awesomenest of everything and we work best when we work together. Cut them off and sell our lumber to other markets.

Say what you will about the former Prime Minister, is there anyone in Canada who believes that a government led by Stephen Harper would have allowed our trading relationship with the U.S to become a lower priority than legalizing drugs?

You should really do a little research before you make comments... Here, I'll help.

Re: Canada vs trump tarrifs
The most important thing Canada needs to do is join several other countries that are dispensing with the US dollar as the reserve currency. The next thing is as Jimmy said, and that is to develop other markets for our products. Mexico is looking to South America for corn, milk etc.
Mexico is a rapidly developing country and that scares the Yanks. They use lumber in Mexico, as well as a lot of plywood. They are converting generator plants over to natural gas, and soon will be importing more oil as their own reserves dry up.
The Canadian government should be helping to develop these markets instead of giving Syria $850mil to gas it's own people.
As the Mexicans say "Build that F'in wall and the Gringos will still climb over it". Mexico knows how to deal with Trump.

Re: Canada vs trump tarrifs
This is just the beginning of Trump bullying when it comes to trade. Canada needs to pursue any and every other market it possibly can to try to reduce our reliance on the bully. But, in the meantime, the Government has no other choice but to "suck up" whatever the bully dishes out.
The only thing we "ordinary" Canadians can do, is refuse to travel to the U.S. and spend any money there. If enough Canadians do that, it would hurt their tourist industry and have those who normally profit from it demanding their Government switch gears. But I predict the average "ordinary" Canadian will not be willing to take such a drastic step to stand up for their own country, because most folk are "all talk, and no action".

Our lumber isn't competitive in other markets.
