I agree with your post completely. When the :cuss: hits the fan and we finally wake up to what is going on right now it will be a total fiscal nightmare for all taxpaying Canadians, whether they realize it or not at present.

To paraphrase a poster from the Calgary Herald:

The majority of the folks crossing into Canada illegally are actually economic migrants, who are making bogus refugee claims as a means of circumventing the law and being allowed to remain in Canada. However, if the situation is allowed to continue, the cost to the Canadian taxpayer will be enormous.
An increase in asylum claims in Canada could eventually mean a staggering 11-year wait for a hearing and $2.97 billion in social supports for claimants in the meantime

The social support costs for claimants – education, social assistance and health care – were $600 a month each in 2016-17

The consequence of all this is that genuine refugees will have to wait even longer to get into Canada, and there will be less money to help them if and when they do finally make it here.

Our Government, however, despite being aware of all these facts is doing absolutely NOTHING to help correct the situation.
Canada’s immigration minister Ahmed Hussen has reminded potential refugee claimants that entering through unofficial crossings is illegal, and has said they should instead submit their refugee claims in the U.S. Yet, words are meaningless if they’re not backed up by consequences.

In these circumstances, the RCMP is doing its best to give the impression that laws are being enforced. Its officers arrest the migrants for crossing illegally, but quickly release them so that they can proceed with their refugee claims. Potential claimants coming from the U.S. are fully aware of this game. Many Canadians have seen images of the absurd way illegal migrants are being handled on the old Roxham Road several kilometres from the official Lacolle crossing. If this is allowed to continue, it will almost certainly undermine public confidence in our immigration system.

If Ottawa believes the U.S. is safe, then the mode by which migrants enter Canada should be irrelevant to whether they’re permitted to claim refugee status. Canada is a sovereign country; migrants do not generally have an unqualified right to enter its territory, regardless of any agreements on border cooperation. Some commentators have suggested the U.S. can somehow force the loophole to stay in effect. This is inaccurate. As long as Canada considers the U.S. to be safe for refugee claimants, it can refuse migrants entry even if the entire agreement were suspended (our Supreme Court has said refugee claimants in Canada are entitled to a hearing only if they risk being returned to a dangerous country).

The European Union has a similar agreement between its members (known as the Dublin Regulation), which also tries to avoid the “asylum shopping” problem. It does not contain a loophole based on a migrant’s mode of entry, so EU members are supposed to send refugee claimants back to the first EU country that they entered.

Canadian border officials prepare for another spike in illegal border crossings

Border officials are preparing for another spike in asylum seekers coming illegally into Canada from the U.S. as the weather gets warmer.

The RCMP intercepted more than 3,000 irregular border-crossers in January and February, part of a total number of 7,800 asylum seekers processed by the federal immigration department and the Canada Border Services Agency during the same time period.

Those figures don’t include more than 600 additional arrivals who entered the country illegally through Quebec over the Easter weekend.

Officials are expecting those numbers to continue to grow as temperatures rise. Immigration and CBSA officials have been preparing for the influx after getting caught flat-footed last summer dealing with an unexpected surge in mainly Haitian migrants entering Canada through Ontario and Quebec.

“Canada is an open and welcoming country to those in need of protection, but our government is committed to orderly migration to protect Canadians and our immigration system. Our government is prepared for any future fluctuations,” said Mathieu Genest, press secretary for Immigration Minister Ahmed Hussen.

The Liberal government has also committed $74-million to help address lengthy backlogs in processing refugee claims at the Immigration and Refugee Board. The department has also cut work-permit wait times for asylum seekers from three months to three weeks and issued more than 12,000 work permits to asylum seekers in Quebec.

-------------------- * snippings * --------------------

The Canadian Council for Refugees has been calling for the government to suspend the Canada-U.S. Safe Third Country Agreement, which has been cited as a major factor in the spike of irregular border crossings.

The agreement makes it impossible for would-be refugees arriving from the U.S. to claim asylum at an official port of entry to Canada. They can only make such a claim from inside the country, prompting thousands to make the crossing on foot through unofficial entry points.

Suspending the agreement would all but eliminate irregular crossings and make migrant refugees less vulnerable to scammers, Dench said.

“There’s this whole charade that people have to go through in order to make a claim in Canada, which would be completely unnecessary if Canada would simply say, ‘We will suspend the safe third country agreement,’ and then people could apply in a regular way.”

But the government has made it clear no such changes will be forthcoming.

“The safe third country agreement is an important tool used by Canada and the U.S. to co-operate on the orderly handling of refugee claims. It is a vital component of our well-managed immigration system,” Genest said.

Last year, more than 50,000 asylum claims were processed by immigration and CBSA, more than twice the number processed every year prior since 2011.

This is exactly the reason illegal border crossings need to be stopped. Luckily this guy got caught, but how many criminals manage to slip through undetected?

https://globalnews.ca/news/4200195/sex- ... ng-canada/

If people are genuine refugees, they should follow regular channels. But most of those currently crossing are NOT genuine refugees, they are economic migrants. And, as such, they should follow the rules and apply to immigrate. Not simply try to queue jump by illegally crossing the border and abusing our refugee system.

There are thousands of genuine refugees languishing in camps overseas, whose applications keep getting pushed further and further down the list thanks to these border crossing queue jumpers.

It'd be nice if everyone took a minute to read the link you posted Merry. It is pretty gruesome stuff, skip it, but further down the page you will see that 26,000 and more cross illegally into Canada at this one infamous point in Quebec. Only 1% are refused. That is almost 100% guarantee that if you enter illegally, you are in like Flynn. Wow, what a deal. No wonder they just keep coming.

Goodale, chirping how wonderfully tight screening is at this laughable crossing, I think it's a safe bet the USA let it be known exactly who/what was on our doorstep.

Also note that more tents are being obtained to provide shelter for a greater influx on its way, to Canada, now.

Bang your head against the wall question: why is this third safe country entry still open for business?

Anyone who cries foul at the flood of people illegally crossing the border is a big meanie, plain and simple. That's the Liberal game plan: Invoke the name Stephen Harper and portray anyone who doesn't embrace their ideas as evil racists
