MJ, take a look at the definition of genocide(the deliberate killing of people, especially those of a particular ethnicity or nation) before comparing genocide as we know it to the cultural genocide ( I agree) to the first nations. Have there been moments where natives have been targeted, yes, but really...the entire native population of Canada was NEVER targeted.
of couse the govt of canada doesnt reconize what happened in canada as that would open themselves up to all sorts of trouble.

but lets review for fun and giggles . the micmak being a subject of bounty on their heads is what ? european sport ? the war that took place on chilcotin platuea for a way to the pacific was what ? misunderstanding? using final solution to describe what should be applyed to first nations years before the nazis and is where the nazis got the term from is what ? just joking ? the residential schools where first nation kids were murdered and buried with no markers and parents lied to was what ? wellt hey way they themselves described it was bringing the savages around.

canada cant lose this shanmefull facts and dark days until canada gains the courage and humiliyy to admit it happened . i dont care if you dont like it and want to pretend it never happened . your ignorance wont change what is a reality for the people that have had to live with it. until i see you asking jews to just up and forgive hitler your opinion will remain hypocritical and shamefull :smt045

Equating the way Macdonald treated First Nations people to the way Hitler and his treated Jewish people is absolutely bizarre. They are on nowhere near the same scale. Even the treatment of those interred in Canada's concentration camps, bad as it was, comes nowhere close to what Hitler was doing.

To begin from "both were wrong" and then present the two as in any way equivalent says a great deal about one's willingness to stretch the truth beyond all recognition.

IMO, presenting isolated cases of obvious wrongdoing from Canada's past, bad as they were, as proof of a nation engaged in genocide (!) shows little understanding and no empathy for those who actually have experienced genocide.

It's completely ridiculous... and still, guess what the Jews never did? Got rid of Auschwitz or other Holocaust reminders. Because even though the camps and museums are horrific, they serve a purpose.

Funny how the statues in America (and Canada apparently) are completely offensive, but death camps in Europe still stand

Macdonald clearly played a significant role in the establishment of Canada but the establishment of the country also played a significant role in the destruction of Indigenous culture and societies, he said.

"He clearly attempted to eliminate Indigenous culture by removing children from their families and placing them with people of another race ... for the purpose of wiping out the race of people known as Indian," Sinclair said.

Macdonald also created circumstances that fuelled hardship for Indigenous people to the point where their potential to survive was challenged, Sinclair said.

"Both of which are right within the definition of genocide within the convention on genocide," he said, referring to the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime Genocide adopted by the UN General Assembly in 1948.

incase anyone was wondering what defined genocide that happened in canada

Pretty big over simplification.

In 2015 White Rock advised the band that they needed to arrange for a water supply in the next 18 months. Further they were told that if they couldn't in that time frame, they would extend it.

There has been a permanent boil water advisory on the band land since 2005, all because of the poor condition of the bands water distribution infrastructure.

Approx 120 people live on the reserve. There are about 74 band members of which 40 live on band land.

The chief of the Semiahmoo First Nations is paid $267,309 a year. The mayor of Calgary get $218,000. The mayor of Summerland gets $28,324.

The band has been fighting with both Surrey and White Rock over many disputes, putting up fences, demanding that the pumping station for the water system be moved from band land (it's on the border) , a cost of 2 to 3 million $.

Here's an article on the dispute that was in the Vancouver Sun Sep 16, 2016.

Because they haven't kept up with the upkeep of their water distribution system within the reserve.

Do you think White Rock has two water systems ? One with clean water for White Rock residents and another they pipe to the reserve ?

He stated the reason in the post and it is in the article.

The reserve did not maintain its equipment.

If you're intent on retroactively applying the UN definition, as Sinclair has done here, do bear in mind how many of the various First Nations tried to stamp one another completely out of existence. Very literally tried to eliminate the other group of people. Not by removing their children from their families, not by integrating, not by putting events in motion that affected the others' potential to survive, but by intentionally slaughtering those who were not like them, those they felt threatened by for whatever reason they had to do what they did.

There's no one unstained by the past, and there is a huge difference between what happened in the context of a developing nation, and what happened inter-tribe prior to and after the arrival of Europeans in what's now Canada, and what happened in Nazi Germany.

If we're to move forward as a nation, it's by facing the past squarely and respectfully, not by skewing it all out of proportion in one direction or the other.

Well, I wasted my time and googled your assertion above, and found nothing to support your claim of "fact" that Hitler had anything to do with John A. or even knew or cared that he had existed. Nothing. A little tip. When you call something a "fact", you probably should know that it is a fact.

What I did find instead of this excellent article in the National Post, which had this little tidbit:

If the First Nations and their authorized spokespeople persist in defaming the memory of John A. Macdonald by likening him to Hitler, and calling Macdonald a genocidist, a purveyor of hate, a partisan of apartheid, and a racist, they will very seriously damage the legitimate interests they claim to pursue.

This constant need to completely revise history in the worst possible way has an extremely detrimental effect on legitimate FN issues. Continuing to stupidly compare MacDonald to Hitler is not only wrong, but extremely dangerous and very damaging to real concerns. Unless this is some sort of secret campaign to hurt the First Nations in this country, then this kind of horrible and disgusting comparative must stop immediately.
