Energy east pipeline dead

Post by Mark5 »

It is not dead. Just on hold. One day in the future it will be built. That day will come when people realize that there really is no alternative for the earths gift of fossil fuels no matter how hard they wish. Let the other countries use all theirs up first. We will be sitting on the proverbial gold mine.

The Canadian government has just told the world that we are closed for business. Very short sited, just to appease the lunatics.

This is a very sad day for Canada, because it means that instead of helping a poorer part of our country get richer, we're continuing to leave ourselves beholden to a country that doesn't give a darn about us, or our economic well being.

Trump is not wrong to "put America first", that's his job. But why the heck isn't OUR Government doing the same in this country and putting CANADA first?

It looks very calculated to have TransMountain make this move. Especially since now you have Notley come out and say that without Energy East the KinderMorgan pipeline through BC is that much more needed.

Earlier opponents (myself included) pointed out that with Energy East and Keystone XL there was going to be plenty of capacity to move the material from Alberta. And with the BC government now getting in the way of the KinderMorgan expansion it looked harder to move, so that's the reason they decided to get out of Energy East. Help put pressure to get KinderMorgan pushed through.

Former NB Premier Frank McKenna has some thoughts and I agree with him:

The former premier of New Brunswick believes the termination of TransCanada’s Energy East pipeline is a disservice to ‘the majority’ of Canadians. Frank McKenna – who is currently deputy chair of the TD Bank Group – told BNN that killing the pipeline will only harm the Canadian energy market.

“Canadians have to look in the mirror and decide: ‘Is this what we want?’” McKenna told BNN on Thursday. “Do we want to continue to receive sub-optimum prices for our resources? Would we be better off simply having a debate as to whether we want to produce the resources or not?”

“At least have an honest debate, instead of this phoney debate that allows obstructionists – almost to the point of militancy – to killing what every poll has demonstrated is the will of the majority. And that’s what we have today.”

Canada has the capability of becoming an energy powerhouse, but the minority seem to be running the show.

This is what happens when you elect a government, who has no clue in economics, or what drives the economy.

When the government changes the rules "after the fact" this decision is the result. To the detriment of the Canadian economy.

Obstructionism has become a very profitable industry. It taps into populism and ideologies, as well as deliberately creating "fashions" in what many pass off for thinking. There is a lot of money poured into that industry.

Opponents: Yay!
Proponents: Boo!

The reality is that the only real winner here is the rail industry that instead of it going through pipelines to market it will be driven right through our towns and communities along the rail lines to market.

But then again the Rail industry is known for not having huge rail disasters...........

Prime Minister Trudeau, in QP, blamed market conditions for the cancellation of Energy East. However, CBC's Evan Dyer read part of a letter that Transcanada had just released and in it the company pointed to "regulatory" issues for the cancellation more than market conditions.

At least there is some good news that comes with this story . . . good news for US oil exporters and good news for Saudi Arabia. Bad news for Canada though.
