$10 + Million a Piece

Post by kelofornia »

I guess $10 million (give or take) is the going price to donate to an immigrant that returned to his/her homeland and faced the reason the family left in the first place.

This absolutely ridiculousness. They each had "careers" in Canada that would never have provided them with a multi million dollar nested in such a short period of time.

No where in the news report does it suggest that they were forced to visit the countries where the tortures were endured. They were merely improperly vetted by Canadaian agencies, (no surprise about that) what does that have to do with their own choice to go to war torn locales.

They are Canadian citizens, entitled to the same protections as you and me, and because of mistakes the government of Canada made, they all suffered torture. This has been in the works for a very long time and they should have had a resolution a long time ago, long before the Liberals came to power. This compensation is essentially punishing Canada for betraying her own.

I don't like we always bail out Canadians that find themselves in *bleep* in f'd up countries, but we always have.
If their names were Leblanc, Wilson or Macdonald and not Almalki, Maati and Nureddin it probably wouldn't have made the news.

It's not rocket science to not visit the locations in the report. Do so at your own risk.

This is true to a point, but when your own country betrays you, and knowingly cooperates with those who would torture you, even providing false information to make your torture more likely, it has gone too far and should be held accountable. The real story here should be how we screwed up so much and why did it take so long to resolve this issue.

No where in the report does it state that the Canadian government shared information with the other countries in question.

It has been common knowledge for decades that visiting these countries is potentially hazardous.

A report from just yesterday (all be it not a Castanet report) regarding passports states travel to certain places is DANGEROUS.

North Korea

Interesting that Egypt is not on that list yet is one of the locations this occurred. Likewise at the time of the capture, Syria was not a war zone (though the US were already committing acts of war against it during the 2003 invasion of Iraq)

From the CBC report:
CBC News wrote:CBC News obtained exclusive access to some 18,000 pages, which showed Canadian law enforcement officials not only knew three Canadians were being tortured in Syrian jails in a post-9/11 crackdown, but also co-operated with Syrian officials in their interrogations.

The files also show that a Canadian ambassador helped to deliver questions the RCMP and CSIS wanted put to the Canadians imprisoned in Syria, a country with a dismal human rights record.

Cooperating with interrogations doesn't indicate the Canadian officials had anything to do with the initial detainment of the individuals.

Detainment of any individual using a Canadian passport would be cause for the authorities to be called no matter the country.

I would like to know why they were detained in the first place??????

The majority of countries over there have been unstable for decades.

So once again, to avoid the details that would come out about the Chretien government's mistreatment of prisoners, Trudeau pays hush money.

This is exactly the same motivation Trudeau had with Khadr. It's all about protecting the Liberal brand, and nothing to do with compensation for any injustices.

CBC again:
A 2008 federal inquiry found the actions of Canadian officials contributed indirectly to the torture of three men.

We will probably never know how much Canada contributed to their torture or detainment, but we can be sure that it was not inconsiderable, or our governments would have fought this to the bitter end.

So you want to mince words.

The three in question got themselves detained all on their own Or was it because they were carrying Canadian passports? Doubtful.

"Indirectly" indicates that the contribution was unintended. Yet the three individuals INTENDED to visit those locations.

Pure conjecture here.....but I wonder how much of that 31 million goes back to the countries in question.
