I thought he was the PM and no longer a snowboard instructor?

People attacking him for no reason are more embarrassing to Canada than anything he's done so far.

If this was the first time Trudeau had embarrassed Canada it would be something. However, it is far from the first incident and, if I might be so bold, I would suggest it won't be the last.

You are right - he's busy failing at being PM now instead of getting high and failing as a snowboard instructor.

People attacking him for no reason are more embarrassing to Canada than anything he's done so far.

And people defending PM Dumb Dumb for continually embarrassing Canada, such as in this case with the TPP, are more embarrassing than anything.

Perhaps a little egg on some faces: https://beta.theglobeandmail.com/news/politics/canada-10-other-pacific-nations-agree-on-core-elements-of-new-trade-deal/article36911294/

"Canada and 10 other countries have reached an agreement on the "core elements" of a new Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal, but some contentious areas – including auto rules and cultural protections – have been set aside for further negotiations.

The late-night deal was reached Friday on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation forum in Da Nang, Vietnam. It came just hours after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was accused of blocking an agreement earlier in the day."

Negotiating tactics? Who knows. The TPP sucked the way the US and Japan had rigged it. Things have changed, Canada now has CETA coming in, and certainly with NAFTA headed down the drain (Trump wants it gone) it looks like Canada is just keeping the options for TPP open.

Old rule of thumb: never go into a negotiation you are not willing to walk away from....

From what I have been able to discern, CETA, between what the Harper government and what the Trudeau government have been able to negotiate, looks like the superior win-win deal.

TPP is tough because exactly how do you negotiate a free trade deal with low wage countries? In my book you will always be on the losing end of such a deal.

Not personally attacking someone = / = defending. He's made plenty of decisions with which I disagree, but I'm not a 5-year-old who is going to resort to calling him "dumb dumb."

As per evidence on the first page of this thread, it wasn't Trudeau's sole decision to cancel TPP, not did he "sabotage" anything. But I know it's more fun to simply prevaricate and come up with sensationalist garbage instead of looking at facts.

Like I’ve said in other posts, you generally need to take any headlines and topics posted by the OP with a grain of salt, and just read the news for yourself. Likewise it’s better to just ignore some of the other posters. If someone’s debating and conversational prowess consists of making elementary school nicknames for their leaders, they’re just not worth acknowledging.

While Trudeau can be an embarrassment at times it is relieving that he's not as stuffy as some posters here seem to be. Then again, I could be wrong.

https://beta.theglobeandmail.com/news/politics/canada-10-other-pacific-nations-agree-on-core-elements-of-new-trade-deal/article36911294/

Couple of key quotes:

"We were not going to be rushed into a deal," Trudeau told reporters at his closing APEC news conference.

"It should come as no surprise and it actually didn't come as a surprise to people who'd noticed that I was saying that and have been saying that all week."

SNIP

"The challenge for Canada and Mexico at the TPP talks is that both countries are also in the midst of renegotiating the North American free-trade agreement with the U.S., so many of the same issues are in play at the separate negotiating tables"

SNIP

"While APEC has 21 members, the 11 countries of the TPP are Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore and Vietnam."

As I mentioned before, when the US and Japan were "the big dogs" in the original TPP negotiations, the "agreement" was essentially "this is what the US and Japan have agreed to - like it or lump it!". With Trump having pulled the US out of the TPP, Canada moves to the #2 economy and is much more important in the potential deal. That gives us a chance to negotiate a deal that is a real win-win for Canada and the potential partners. I don't think that was possible with the US playing hardball. IF (and I think it will) NAFTA falls apart, then the revised TPP could be a good option.

IF NAFTA falls apart, Canada and Mexico can reset the TPP negotiations to better suit what works for all without the US bullying. While NAFTA falling apart will cause some short term pain, diversifying our trade patterns (combined with CETA) would lower our dependence on the US, and thus weaken the US position in any CUSFTA negotiations.

Really though, I think specific and separate trade deals with the US, while more work, are more appropriate, as the US uses blanket agreements to "strip mine" the economies of other countries. So a deal on softwood, a separate deal on agriculture, etc. etc.
The middle path - everything in moderation, and everything in its time and order.

Some pundits are suggesting Trudeau successfully played hardball and won Canada some very important concessions on this very important deal. It’s not the way I would have liked to see him do it. I don’t see the class in that and I would like to see some more class demonstrated by our leaders. I know had it been Harper or Trump the usual suspects on here would be raucously congratulating and defending them. Oh well. Some things will never change.

It certainly says a lot more about the poster than the topic, doesn't it.
