Re: Scheer bump turned out to be a pothole
It's a bit too soon to be making predictions about the next election, because a lot can happen in the time remaining. But the shine is definitely coming off the Trudeau Liberals as people start to think about the ramifications of all that debt the Libs are racking up. And Trudeau's "playboy" image isn't helping much either.
That said, Scheer doesn't have the kind of "star" quality that helped get Trudeau elected. His nice "boy next door" image isn't the kind that inspires the kind of hero worship Trudeau enjoyed. So if he does win the next election, I think it will be more the result of disillusionment with the Liberals, than an honest desire to see Scheer as our next PM.

That nice boy next door. With dimples. The day after he was chosen as Conservative leader, the party told him to take down his website. And quickly. He had all kinds of anti-abortion hate and nonsense about how Canada would be better off if women weren't in the workforce.
Nice or not, they were all once "nice boys next door".

Or the kind of leadership quality that most Canadians would be looking for to replace him.
Most people believed there was no way such a divisive and hate-promoting goof like Trump could ever actually be elected to the position of US president. These are strange and precarious times, and the very real possibility of a backlash on so-called "populists" (people who assume they speak for "ordinary people") could result in the first federal NDP government in Canada.

I didn't know that he was a male chauvinist, but if what you say is true he sure sounds like one. Which makes me wonder what the heck the Conservatives were thinking if they elected someone like that as their leader?
Unfortunately, even if he IS what you suggest, I still think he has a chance of winning if the Libs keep racking up the debt. Because people are starting to feel uncomfortable with such fiscal irresponsibility. It was one thing to agree to a small deficit to build some much needed infrastructure and get the economy moving again. But it's entirely another to have massive overuns, with very little in the way of new infrastructure to show for it, and all at a time when the economy doesn't appear to be in need of any such stimulus.
Add to that the image of wealthy "playboy" types such as Trudeau and Morneau telling large swaths of the population that they should give up some of their pet tax credits to help stoke the federal coffers, and you've got a recipe for a Liberal defeat come election time. Which will be most unfortunate if Scheer is the kind of person you say he is.

LOL Merry, you should have been around politics long enough to know that the idiots on the far left will spin any position that isn't in 100% lock-step with their brainless beliefs to be "hate". *removed*

Sadly there's some truth to what you say GB. I'm tired of political dissent being construed as something far worse than simply disagreeing with current popular sentiment, but that seems to be "par for the course" these days. But it's not just limited to those on the left; right wingers can be just as quick to misconstrue things if it's to their political advantage to do so.
That said, I have read that Andrew Scheer is privately opposed to abortion, gay marriage, and legalized pot; but have also read that, if elected, he doesn't intend to push those views on the rest of the country. Apparently he realizes "that ship has sailed" when it comes to repealing those issues, because the majority of people are comfortable with them. And he has no intention on fighting the election on issues he knows he can't win.
So, provided he doesn't intend to impose those particular personally held beliefs on the rest of us, I see no reason why he couldn't become our next PM. He certainly seems personable enough, and more in touch with "ordinary" Canadians than our current millionaire "jetsetting playboy".

Point is that half way in Trudeau's first run, with some complacent support and enraged opposition the Cons should be running away with this- Groundhogs see bigger shadows than Scheer.
Wouldn't be a shocker to me if the Liberals do nearly as well next election as last.

That poll tells me that the Liberals and Conservatives are very close. And certainly does not say a Liberal majority.
JT has played fast and loose with tax payer money, and I believe people are fed up with his reckless spending.

Indeed Merry. No shortage of brainless idiots on the right, posting deliberately misleading memes and outright untrue crap knowing a good number of their right friends will swallow up any sort of garbage as long as it suits their partisan agenda, and assuming everyone who disagrees with them on any issue is an "evil leftist". I guess just letting Ezra or Milo do their thinking for them saves a lot of time and allows them to stop reading when the information gets uncomfortable or challenging.

Re: Scheer bump turned out to be a pothole
The long run is more important.
The political challenge for Trudeau at the moment is actually fighting the atrocious BC NDP, and supporting the economies of Alberta and Saskatchewan. IF Trudeau can beat back the silliness of the NDG, then that will weaken the Con attack position.
In the background, some of the ministers, like Jane Philpott, are actually doing some very good work.
There is also, at the moment, a small Jagmeet Singh bump. Remains to be seen if that lasts.
The process of breaking up Canada's prohibition will also have an impact. If that goes well, then there will be some happy campers - but will they vote?

The middle path - everything in moderation, and everything in its time and order.

Trudeau also has to face the backlash of the small business owner in this country if he puts his draconian and down-right idiotic tax reforms in place. He and fellow Trust Fund Baby Morneau still have a long row to hoe there.

Not sure what this means...they can meme all right, it's just not funny, or truthful. But what else is new.
