Just for the record, caffeine is a performance enhancement drug.
Maybe Suncor should test to see if one shift is cheating on the other.

MJ with all due respect you have no :cuss: idea what you are talking about. I’ll ask once again if you’ve ever been up there? I spent 5 years in the oil sands and still have some ties there and can tell you that safety is number 1 priority on all sites including Suncor. While based on the Suncor site I had a coworker/friend killed in a workplace accident. Every action is planned and it all revolves around safety. Certain policies and procedures were implemented after the accident that are still in place today. The money, time, effort, resources, etc that go into making the oilsands a safe workplace is obviously beyond your prejudicial comprehension. IMO for an environment that can be harsh and dangerous, it is probably the safest in the world.

True. It has become a highly politicized industry and is constantly under the microscope. They are nuts on safety. Jobsite safety has become an industry unto itself.

I currently commute from the Okanagan to Suncor's Firebag site and want to set the record straight on a couple of things. ALL the big company camps are dry camps now, CNRL went dry this past August and they were the last of the company camps to have onsite bars and permit drinking in the rooms. Now it's zero tolerance. New employees, or existing employees that have been offsite for an extended period must go through drug and alcohol screening before being allowed on site. All employees involved in any accident or close call on site are tested immediately. The presence of any alcohol or restricted drug in their system and they are gone. Immediately gone. A security guard and job steward will escort the employee to his room and watch while he packs his stuff then escort him off site. It's ruthless. Drug dogs tour the entire camp regularly. We see them at Firebag a couple of times a month. A security guard will unlock every room on a bunk, usually thirty to fifty room depending on the camp, and Officer Fido will tour every room. They're pretty sharp, usually ten or fifteen seconds to a room if nothing attracts its attention. I've seen them tweak on a couple of Tylenol 3's in a shaving kit.

This is normal. The employees all know about it ahead of time and are generally required to sign off on site policy as part of their new-hire orientation. I'm not saying there are no drugs on a site like that, but for the most part people who work there are reluctant to risk such a lucrative living on recreational drugs.

Well my point is real simple vegas . Im against folks being anything but sober at work and i asked a simple question

If suncor does random drug tests and booze showed up in a,test should that person lose their job.

So far no one wants to answer it .you all dancing around it .
My new question is why ?

There is always an element of society that sees nothing at all wrong with pot. Fair enough, after all it's going to be legal soon (to an extent) so of course it's understood that's it's not particularly life threatening on its own. I don't use either any more but given a choice I'd take pot over alcohol simply because the potential for damage on a number of levels is smaller with pot. But let's not fool ourselves here, it does affect things like reaction time, cognitive ability, motor control and coordination, and thus causes an overall reduction in functional ability. Anyone operating at less than optimal levels is also operating at a correspondingly reduced level of safety. If the pro-pot element is suggesting that any industry should accept less than optimal safety levels because pot is legal then they are seriously missing the whole point of this exercise.

Pot enthusiasts are quick to state that there has never been a fatality from overdosing on marijuana. I can accept that as fact. However there is no shortage of information on marijuana related deaths and accidents, where marijuana impairment has contributed significantly to an incident. All other things being equal, the mere suggestion that someone under the effects of pot can operate in an industrial environment as safely as someone who is not is just wrong.

From the civil rights and privacy perspective, with regards to testing and on-site drug searches and such, no one is obligated to submit to these searches. They can simply choose to work somewhere else if it really bugs them that much.

The "prison" analogy has some merit to it, if you let it. Indeed, one of the bigger challenges of camp life is getting your head around being there in a manner that lets you deal with the long work hours and relative isolation. It's no surprise that some will seek out chemical solutions to that particular problem, heck, there's a pill for just about everything these days. Work camps are full of people who spend every waking minute wishing they were somewhere else but stay for the money. Personally, I figure that's a dark path to go down, and work instead to keep my head in a place that lets me do the time with a minimum of negativity.

Show me a place where I can pull down six digits for swinging a mop and still have my feet on my own coffee table every night and I'd be gone in the wink of an eye. Until then...

The last time I flew in they held us back from the luggage claim at the aerodrome until officer fido had had a chance to check out all the incoming bags. Never seen that one before.
