Workplace has the potential to become even more dangerous with this ruling. Recreational drug users will take full advantage of this.

If those recreational drug users only injury themselves (or worse) on the job due to their drug of choice, I could't care less. If their stupidity causes injury or worse to someone else, hopefully that injured party takes the idiot to court for huge payout for damages & loss wages.

I don't think it will be that big an issue in the not too distant future. A couple years back I mentored a young immigrant kid finishing up his engineering degree. He is now working on projects Peoria, Ill. that will make the next generation of heavy equipment (bulldozers, graders, etc.) autonomous. There simply won't be operators in the future to worry about in many instances and this ruling has simply advanced that coming. Remember that value is not always measured in increased margins or profitability, it is also measured in reduced risk and uncertainty including liability.

LOL When 1/2 o the guys tested show signs would you feel safe working. Then of course you could wait till someone is hurt and then say it was the companies fault they knew and did nothing.

NOT on the worksite though. What ever happened to safety first and thinking of others? What if the guy beside you or you depend on for YOUR safety is high on substances?

Privacy vs Safety here MJ , and I go with safety.

This is also probably going to get contested too at some point because one of the cornerstones of Canadian law is the good of the community as a whole over the good of the individual. However, even when that happens, there will be some limitations. It's all about balance.

Were did i say anyone should work impaired ? Lol its clear. Me and keith are the only ones who understands. What allowing random drug tests actualy means .

My question is this if alcohol showed up on said test would that person still have a job ? Cold medicine ? Sleeping pills ? Nicotine ? :smt045

Queen i have worked somecthe most dangerous jobs in bc. Logging. Commercial fishing. Overhead cranes. In heavy industry .i never once worried if my fellow worker was high on something .but i did worry when they were hungover from drinking . :smt045

And being over tired

Now,suncor can higher based on criminal records.
No one will oppose that .

To me this is another downfall of a union. Ultimately it is on private property and should be up to the employer to test if they so choose. MJ how is the employer and workers supposed to police it, by looking at each other’s pupils to see if their high?? I spent 5years on that site and can tell you that there was a fair amount of drug use.

They also would bring in a drug sniffing dog to go through the locker rooms and contractors offices....is that also an invasion of privacy? Before you answer, I will say the dog found drugs quite often. When it comes to drinking, if someone showed up impaired or with the smallest signs of a hangover, they were driven home. In the oil patch when a contractor is hired to work for an oil company, they abide by the oil companies rules. If the oil company wants drug tests and *bleep* test, the contractor provides it or isn’t allowed on the lease or job site. Of course these are non union jobs.

I dont know if letting dogs go through is invasion of privacy
I doubt ot as they have animals at airports. And border crossings . What they do not do at borders or airports is demand drug tests .

When its a person body things. Change . You seem to be only focused on one drug .and you refused to answer if someone drink booze should they lose their job
Alcohol is as much a drug as,crack is .

Does suncor screen for alcohol.use ?

If not i ask why not ?

Maryjane you're opinion on "let the workers police themselves" is so naive.

Why do you think the drug testing came into effect to begin with? Probably because so many people were using drugs when working. Think about it.
