Be curious to know if those who drove were impaired beyond what was acceptable with alcohol.
It should be ZERO tolerance for both, but you can be certain more people drink and drive after two hours of consuming.

I heard the story on the news the other day. The fellow obviously pro pot said heavy users do not have impairment issues because they are use to it and know what to expect.

I must add, this was no scientist or specialist as they did not say Doctor or follow with any credentials of the sort.

Really, is that like alcoholics are not impaired because they are used to functioning while impaired?

Let's be real, if alcohol impairs all even at a reading well below the Provincial suspension level according to expert opinion, through study and observation do you think the ill effects of any drug is not the same.

Personally I'm no scientist but common sense will tell you that it will.

Two different substances that need to be addressed independantly. Marijuana affects individuals differently. For some it actually improves focus. Especially those on the ADHD spectrum. For others they shouldn't leave the couch.

As a long time pot smoker with first hand experience I can say that after weed has been legalized I really do not think there will be a sudden increase in weed impairment just like I strongly believe that there will not be a sudden increase in population of weed smokers. People that smoke are going to continue to smoke whether its legal or not. And the people that drive while stoned will continue to drive whether weed is legal or not. The fact is not much will change other than where people buy it.

"While scientists agree that THC impairs driving performance, levels of THC may not always be a reliable indicator of the actual degree of impairment.

Zero level legislation may unfairly convict those who are heavy or regular marijuana users and who have a higher tolerance level and are not impaired at the time of driving.

Heavy marijuana users may have THC levels that remain in the brain and body, indicating a chronic level of impairment. And some users may not show the obvious signs of impairment even though they have significant THC concentrations in their blood."

This is dangerous because as a 34 year old that has been smoking weed for over 20 years I could quit smoking today and can still test positive for weed 2 weeks from now in a blood or urine test. Physical road side sobriety tests currently being used is the best method of taking impaired people off the road. Otherwise you'll have cops handing out DUI's to 38% of the population when only a handful were actually impaired.

To be a "--" disturber is there any proof that there is not some level, possibly tiny, of impairment as long as the THC can be detected.

Be a low level of impairment. Even daily heavy smokers drive around all day long. Rarely hear of them causing havoc like a drunk.
Its just different . I suppose u could be impaired from cough syrup as well. This isnt something a lot of people fret over

This is why there needs to be a cognition/responsiveness/impairment test, as opposed to a simple drug test. Because simply testing positive for thc does not necessarily indicate impairment. Meanwhile a sleepy driver could be far more impaired and hazardous without testing positive for anything.

I agree that you could be impaired by cough syrup or many other things, but that does not make any of it right. I am just wondering if there could be some impairment. Does anyone know the level? Do you or does anyone know that it is not the heavy users that drive all day that cause most of the accidents. They could be the main cause of accidents related to marijuana..

I believe it is something people fret over. I have talked to people and I have read many posts on these threads where people are worried about impaired driving caused by marijuana. In fact according to news provinces, the federal government, police and mny others are also worried.

Actually the real life saver would be a test for stupid that could prevent people from driving. There would be no traffic on the roads.

The popularity behind weed is that it impairs. Impairment by relaxation or calmness or a general feeling of well being. It is why people drink (at least why they start) and why they turn to other drugs. Escape.

But lets not kid ourselves here; they all impair the users ablity to one degree or another.

I feel OK after 3 drinks and wouldn't have an issue driving but after 4 or more, I wouldn't risk it. My level of impairment has increased significantly.

I have never been a weed smoker. Not to say I never tried but it just didn't do it for me. I have a family member however who has smoked it regularly for 50 years. Every day, multiple times every day and it has never caused him problems when it came to work or operating motor vehicles or power tools.

The preceding statement is not an endorsement of those choices but rather, a fact of life. His life anyway.

Jlives mentioned that some can function quite handily while others shouldn't leave the couch. I garee with that totally. Just like drinking; some function and some don't.

There needs to be a line when it comes to operating a vehicle while taking anything that impairs ones ability to function at their personal highest level. 0.05 is the level we enjoy in BC and it varies from place to place but the line is there.

When weed is legalized, there needs to be some form of control because like it's liquid counterpart, there is a level of impairment enjoyed which can dimish ones ability to stay between the lines.

Until the day arrives where one can apply to have ones personal threshold increased because of a demonstrable ability to function at a higher level than most others when enjoying their drug of choice, we will have to respect the laws that exist today. While we may feel cheated because we know just how far we can go, we need to understand that the law applies to all of us equally.
