I feel sorry for retailers these days. One over reported online poll and you’re forced to pander to the online pollsters demands.
Just wait, there will be other situations like this in the future and the retailer will be compelled to comply.
As for MEC, I’ll probably keep my membership, but their anti hunting stance has kept me away for years.

Possession of a firearm, including an AR-15, is illegal in Canada. Section 92 of the Criminal Code of Canada

Therefore; you would be breaking two laws in Canada by doing what you are thinking.

They cannot be taken to crown land, hunting grounds, or any other area. Generally speaking they may only be taken from the owner’s residence, where they must be stored in a locked container or safe, to a gun range to be shot, a gun shop to be sold, or a gun smith’s to be repaired.

Incorrect, With a Purchase and Acquisition license followed by a restricted arms license a Canadian can legally buy a AR15. Trust me on this one as my brother is a military arms collector and owns a couple AR15's. Which just an FYI is the Semi-Auto civilian model of the military grade selectable firing rate M16. There is a BIG difference between "Restricted" and "Banned" look at the links below for proof. An example of a BANNED rifle is a AK-47, Fully auto, 32 cap mag. AR15 is Semi auto and in Canada the magazine only holds 10 rounds. Also I am a law biding citizen and I wouldnt even think of circumventing the required permits and licensing measures but thank you for assuming Im a criminal simply because I want to protect myself when Im hours away from help in the middle of our backwoods.

Yes it is true you need special permission to carry a handgun while out in the bush but I can use the AR for hunting purposes. To get special permission one must prove he/she needs one (above having the PAL and Restricted licenses) On my solo multi day hiking trips in the remote backwoods im not overly concerned about Bear attacks but more so Cougars and wolves which a .38 DE would be more than enough and could draw it quick enough to scare away any cat or dog that thinks I could be lunch. Also it would be enough to make a wondering bear think twice about making me a meal. But to your point If a bear was *bleep* off enough and was charging at me I doubt even a Slug from a shotgun would drop it before it could rip me apart.

"It is a pocket pistol, in the same class as the Walther PPK and SIG Sauer P230/232 available in .380 ACP caliber. It is meant for personal protection in close quarters"

DE come in all calibers the most popular in Gangster movies being the .50 cal which if you have any knowledge in firearms will know its a ridiculous size bullet, most men can only fire a couple rounds max before their hands cant take the kick anymore and the mag size is very limited. Also The recoil on that size would make hitting any target let a lone a moving target almost impossible.

^ Mostly correct, BUT in Canada magazines and clips are pinned to 5 rounds on all centre fired rifles, though, if you really wanted to you, you could remove the pin with minimal effort. Highly illegal, but easily done. Also, an AR-15 cannot be used for hunting for two reasons. 1) The ammunition is too small (it's less than 30 calibre), and 2) the barrel length is too short, so it's basically classified the same as a hand gun, rendering it only legal at the shooting range.

Speaking of guns. the #FakeNewsMedia is going all out in their dishonest and deceptive ways to fool everyone who doesn't know a thing about guns...

Looks like the NRA is starting to throw a few jabs back. Gotta cheer for these guys. They are the ones standing up for freedom. For the flag and for their constitutional rights.

An NRA ad released on March 4 called out “every Hollywood phony” and the “lying media” to put them on notice that their “time is running out.”

The ad was released just hours before the 90th Oscars began. It promotes NRA spokeswoman Dana Loesch’s new show and is clearly intended to send the signal that the claims of leftists in Hollywood, the media, and pro-athletes will not go unchallenged.

Loesch opens the ad by saying, “We’ve had enough of the lies, the sanctimony, the arrogance, the hatred, the pettiness, the fake news. We are done with your agenda to undermine voters’ will and individual liberty in America.”

She continues, “So to every lying member of the media, to every Hollywood phony, to the role model athletes who use their free speech to alter and undermine what our flag represents, to the politicians who would rather watch America burn than lose one ounce of their personal power … your time is running out”:

“To every lying member of the media, to every Hollywood phony, to the role model athletes who use their free speech to alter and undermine what our flag represents…Your Time is running out. The clock starts now."

— NRATV (@NRATV) March 4, 2018

In the latter part of the ad, Loesch gets specific, referencing certain media and news personalities by name, putting them on notice as well.

She said, “To the Joy-Ann Reids, the Morning Joes, the Mikas, to those who stain honest reporting with partisanship, to those who bring bias and propaganda, to CNN, the Washington Post, the New York Times, your time is running out.”

^^So, what do you think they mean by "your time is running out"?

Sounds pretty extreme to me. When people have to use this kind of language, along with "terrorist" or "denier" or whatever, it seems to me there's something more going on than simply standing up for what's right. I don't think extreme positions help us much, ever, and since the NRA wants very much for people to adopt an extreme position, I'm thinking the motivation is probably the usual: follow the money.

In terms of MEC, I think the op ed Jack DeBear is pretty accurate.

Again, follow the money. MEC built their brand virtue-signalling, and now they have a choice to "own it" or to ask their membership not to be extremist in their views.

Well you are also mostly correct, although I can swap out the barrel to make it legal length and can "technically" get around the 5 round mag limit by using a .223 "handgun" mag instead and that would be less illegal than unpinning the stock 30 round mag. but were splitting hairs now. lol.

In the USA the AR15 is a very popular small game hunting rifle as there are some big benefits for a hunter to own a AR15.
1) CHEAP ammo for target practicing
2) Very accurate at 200-300 yards anything further and the bullet drop is pretty brutal
3) Low recoil so a hunter can fire it all day without being fatigued
4) Damaged caused is enough to kill with a decently placed shot without blowing a huge hole in the animal ruining the meat around the wound.

Anyways back to my main point which I do believe you agree with is its perfectly legal to own an AR15 in Canada after you get your PAL and Restricted Arms license. It is also perfectly legal to carry a handgun or any restricted arms (not banned arms) if you get the required ATT permit.

Most people I know do not own guns but almost all enjoy going into the bush or to the range to shoot off some rounds. If there is any complaint I can provide right now is all the people shooting their guns unsafely up forestry roads. Shooting across the road and Skeet shooting into the valley below for example.

The 22-store, 2,400-employee retailer, which manufactures about 20 per cent of its products, has struggled financially, losing $11.5 million in its 2018-19 fiscal year, which ended in February.

I'm glad they are losing money. Especially after I cancelled my membership.

MEC branded gear used to be some of the best on the market. But they’ve slowly whittled away that quality without lowering prices to match, and this is the result. It’s also pretty bad when items on sale online aren’t on sale in stores. Way to discourage retail shopping...

Used to shop at MEC all the time. Been a member since 1975. I was looking for a gortex jacket last year and went into MEC. least expensive was around $350.00 and went up to $900 I think. Gore tex has been around for a number of years and I'd be thinking prices would be a bit more affordable now. Never bought.
Was looking for touring skis a number of years ago. What they offered were ridiculously priced in my opinion. Went to Siggi's on 4th in Van and bought boots, bindings and edged skis for what NEC wanted for skis only.

When I do go in to have a look around, store(s) I'm in seem somewhat busy.

They have strayed too far from their roots. It's not a co-op any more, it's a business.

Time to dig up an old thread.

MEC's Board of Directors approved the deal for the co-ops assets to be acquired by Kingswood Capital Management, including the majority of its retail stores.
