Seniors and the budget ,,,,

Post by buteman »

Dear Mr. Trudeau,

My sincere apologies for trespassing on your valuable time but I have a question ,,,, what do seniors get in the budget ??
Please take the time after reading this to think about those Residential Schools, while we small town and country kids were going to one-roomed schools that housed 7 or 8 grades with only one teacher and our parents were buying our books, school supplies and clothing, the Indigenous native kids were in schools where they got a more balanced education.
Oh yes, they got free room and board, free school books, free supplies and clothing to boot !! Don't forget we were also abused and bullied by the masters. And of course they are complaining that they lost their native language, do they think that we, immigrants from Eastern Europe were able to continue to speak our native tongue in schools ,,, no, not at all !!

We all learned to speak, read and write in English and were proud to have such an opportunity to contribute to the development of this great country. So Mr. Trudeau, what do seniors get in the budget ??
We seniors out number Natives, so let's see,,,, okay perhaps you and your mob in Ottawa would resolve senior's grievances sooner if we choose to block the Trans Canada Highway or CN Rail Lines ?? When reporters show up and ask what we want the seniors can answer " the same as the natives have been getting for years " which is ,, sorry sir, the list is extensive ,,, free dental, free eye care, free prescriptions, free post-secondary education, free transportation, no tax on gasoline and other commodities, no income tax, no tax on vehicles, free housing and many other things paid for by us, the tax payer.

Seniors have paid taxes all their lives !! Natives do not pay taxes !! ,,, not that long ago 600,000 Metis are considered natives well Canada is also MY HOME and native land so should I not be considered a native as I was born here ?? How about slipping us seniors a small portion of the pie ? I mean what about the Attawapiskat Band members ,,, I mean really, they were handed 34 million dollars ( that's right folks 34 real big ones ) for just 1500 people that's $ 22,666 each TAX FREE !!
And what do you and your mob in Ottawa give us seniors ? a meager $ 7200.00 and we still have to PAY TAX on that after working fifty plus years and AFTER we've paid our own way, our kid's own way AND Native's way. Absolutely outrageous !! and the natives are demonstrating " Idle no More " and " Pipelines " ,,, you're kidding !!

It's really time for seniors to react, we are just as entitled to protest as are the Natives ,,,, something radically wrong with this picture Mr. Trudeau ,,,, don't you think ??

But seniors are going to be dead soon. Wouldn't it make more sense to invest in youth & young adults. You know the future. Not baby boomers that forgot to save for retirement?

Jk but seriously we should be moving towards those benefits FOR EVERYONE. Except taxes we should all have to pay taxes. But free dental, basic housing and needs covered would be great.

You know maybe a basic minimum income... I know "socialism, Venezuela!!" The sky would fall apparently. But we could find a balance. Time to invest in more social programs for everyone not certain groups.

It should be based on income levels and needs not age gender or race.

The OP contains a lot of false equivalences and misunderstanding, or possible ignorance of the difference between immigrant families who moved to Canada, and the native people who lost nearly everything without any say in the matter.

Not to mention complete (but sadly common) ignorance of our First Nations issues.

Actually, Seniors have already gotten and are getting a fair bit that is in the budget, some of it not new, but put in during the last couple of years:

- A new ministry for Seniors
- Increase in the GIS
- better home care options (and more under consideration)
- New Horizons for Seniors program
- a special program for vulnerable single seniors that can pay up to $950/month
- reopened 9 Veteran's Affairs offices
- lowered the retirement age from 67 to 65

That's quite a bit of $$$ specifically allocated to seniors. There are many more things that benefit all Canadians that seniors get a benefit from. E.g. the beginnings of a national pharmacare program have been made, and it will possibly be expanded.

Think the Liberals don't care about seniors? Think again. Their party structure includes a seniors commission, with a dedicated route to party resolutions - and they listen to those seniors - at their recent convention only 15 party resolutions were adopted, and 2 of those came from their seniors commission!

The important thing to remember is that seniors generally care about their children, care about their grandchildren, and the well being of their families. That means that all programs that benefit all Canadians, and programs that support education etc. for our youth, are of interest to seniors. Seniors specific issues are most often not isolated from issues that affect all. E.g. improving CPP won't benefit existing seniors, but it does benefit their children and grandchildren - and so it means a lot to many seniors and relieves some anxiety about their families futures - which frees up spending money for some seniors.

And yup, many FNs folks are seniors too. We are all Canadians.
The middle path - everything in moderation, and everything in its time and order.

- Increase in the GIS

Didn't that work out to be 55 cents a year ?

Maybe you're thinking about OAS....I think that mighty increase came to a whopping $36.00 per year
Sufficiently advanced incompetence is indistinguishable from malice. There’s a certain point at which ignorance becomes malice, at which there is simply no way to become THAT ignorant except deliberately and maliciously.

I wouldn't be. But of course, that is not anything remotely close to what is happening and/or what is going to happen. Again, I'm just grateful that our next generation of students coming out of high school are going to be so much better informed on the issue and will leave it at that. I know you have unlimited energy to continue making excuses for your racism (including the old classic, "I'm not a racist, you're a racist"), but responding further to that crap only validates it - so I won't. Carry on.
