Years ago my ex had work in New Caledonia. He said it was a strange place where one side of the island was lush and the other side was desert like. Having said that, the number of earthquakes there is worrisome.

A large enough quake at the right spot along mid Atlantic tectonic plate has the potential for massive destruction.
