Cops foil girl's school shooting
by The Canadian Press - Story: 84918
Dec 21, 2012 / 6:29 am

Officials in the U.S. say detectives have arrested a 16-year-old female student and foiled an Arizona school shooting plot with the help of Toronto police.

The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office says the girl's threat was posted on a YouTube channel owned by a transgender community in Toronto.

The owner of the channel contacted Toronto police who then tracked down the teen who had plans to gun down her schoolmates at Red Mountain High and kill herself.

According to Sheriff Joe Arpaio, U.S. detectives acted within hours of being alerted by officers in Toronto on Wednesday and visited the girl's home in Mesa, Ariz., some 32 kilometres from Phoenix.

Police say the girl was arrested after she admitted posting the threat.

They say the teen told officers she planned the attack well ahead of last Friday's school massacre in Connecticut, where 20 young children and six adults died in a shooting rampage.

Police say they found three handguns at the teen's home, but the weapons were released to the girl's father for safe keeping.

They said the girl's parents both told detectives that their daughter had a history of mental health issues, had been seen by a psychiatrist, and had recently been asking about where the guns were kept in the house.

The teen is being detained at a juvenile facility and is facing charges of one count of computer tampering and one count of threatening and intimidating.

"We were very fortunate on this occasion to prevent another possible mass tragedy," Arpaio said in a statement. "It takes more than just law enforcement though. We need the active co-operation of parents, members of the community, and friends and neighbours to effectively stop these potential disasters before they happen."

There was a shooting in the Clackamas Mall in Oregon this week. The guy, described as a perfectly sane and peaceful person, went in to kill as many people as possible with an AR 15. He only shot two people before someone carrying a concealed weapon pulled out his gun. The shooter immediately stopped his rampage and shot himself.

There's no question the NRA is right about arms preventing deaths, but that doesn't mean it's a good idea.

Harder to get, much higher restrictions, lower magazine capacity. Much less common.

We don't have "grandfathered" AR-15's floating around.

So basically, what the US and Russia did during the cold war is what we should do on our streets and in schools.

Thanks NRA.

We can get the semi-auto CZ-585 without a restricted licence, and they are much more powerful than the ar-15. Since the pin limiting the number of rounds is very easy to remove, there's isn't really much stopping anyone from loading up the clips with 30 rounds.

Stealing from your parent in US and stealing from you parent in Canada is exactly the same.

much higher restrictions

Transporation restrictions never stop lunatics.

lower magazine capacity.

The bloodiest school shooting (Virginia Tech) was carried out with a 10-round handgun. Perfectly legal in Canada.

AR-15 don't have to grandfathered.

Have fun talking about how more guns make a country safer.

The USA sure reflects that piece of logic.

If there were armed guards in that school, 26 people would not have died (just as countless deaths were prevented in the Oregon shooting). Doesn't mean it's the best solution, but surely even you can see the logic here.

Its not "more guns make a country safer". It is trained and armed guards protecting something people place a high value on - their children. Like the NRA says - you protect your money with armed guards in banks and you protect your politicians with armed body guards. Why would you balk at protecting your children with properly trained armed guards? Are they not more valuable than money and politicians?

Its the guns in the wrong hands and society's acceptance and even glorification of violence and killing through movies, music and games. Kids are brought up to think that is acceptable and a way to resolve their issues/disagreements.

Cripes, they outlaw chickens fighting each other in rings and dogs fighting each other in rings, but its okay for people to fight each other in rings? That's called "entertainment" and parents even take their kids to watch and to get caught up in the adrenaline of the crowd.

Do people really not see what they are teaching impressionable minds?

He had a AR-15. You cant say that.

Adam could have walked in, took out the guards then the students.

...then what, tanks? Landmines?

Yeah, and the Tooth Fairy could have gone rogue and gone on a killing spree, too. One "could" doesn't negate another "could" just because you feel the need to support your side of the argument.

Yes, anything "could" happen but fercrissakes, landmines and tanks is just ridiculous as an argument. That's about the same ridiculous as saying, "close all the schools in the US and keep your kids lashed to your coattails 24/7/365".

Yeah, well, nobody said adults who did violent things were even remotely intelligent, did they? Quit trying to justify the violence in music, video games and movies. There is NO justification for it.

Supporting the violence in music, video games and movies makes you part of the problem and not even close to wanting a solution. What's the matter - don't want to give up your entertainment? The lives of children are not as valuable to you as your violent games, etc are? What you want is more important than those kids? "Don't touch or legislate MY fun - regulate guns instead!!!" is the battle cry from your side of the fence?

What about you? I haven't heard you say, "You know, maybe having all those guns is part of the problem."
