If it weren't for the Olympics, a lot of the sports would have no exposure at all. So yes, some of these sports do in fact need the Olympics.

Outlived their usefulness? Heck, no. Remember Vancouver? All those untendered contracts to companies outside Canada's borders for clothing, busses, computers, office furnishings, and all kinds of stuff. Because they were untendered they could be inflated with "extra" costs. And because they went to numbered corporations outside Canada they couldn't be forensically audited. So we never found out just who made the money.

Example: the leasing of busses by VanOC went to a US company. Never tendered...... just given to them. Original estimate of leasing the busses was $53 million. The actual cost turned out to be $92 million. The difference could never be traced by Canadian auditors because it was outside Canada. We will never know if there some "fees" that were paid by the American company into Bahama or Swiss bank accounts. The money just vanished once it left Canada.

There is a ton of money to be scammed using the Olympics. Have they outlived their usefullness? Absolutely not. The Olympics allows moving all kinds of money into mysterious places. They are very useful.
