Israel made a huge mistake bombing a UN shelter yesterday. Apparently the UN gave them the coordinates and asked for them to avoid it with the latest barrage. Israel claiming Hamas is storing weapons in such facilities but appears mostly women and children were the only contents. Expect a worldwide condemnation of this latest error in judgement.

Yes, and on a more serious note this is very upsetting – although the killing of innocent Palestinians did not just start today. War and armed conflict is such an ugly and regrettable affair. Making it worse in this situation is it never had to escalate to this. On more than one occasion, Hamas was given the opportunity to engage in cease-fire discussion and refused. Now there are accusations that Hamas extremists were using that very facility to fire on Israeli troops deliberately drawing return fire. No one wants to believe an armed group would calculatingly fire at their enemy from the very location of unarmed citizens - and we still have to wait for some confirmation in this case - but in the case of Hamas extremists, sacrificing the lives of their innocent women and children for media effect is unfortunately standard operating procedure. Disgusting. There is talk about pushing again for cease-fire talks but acknowledgement it will be difficult with Hamas refusing to stop their rocket attacks.

It's essentially an open air prison. How do you not shoot without being near women and children? They have a right to defend themselves and the scale of Israel's attacks is reprehensible. The whole thing just sucks.

So how is the continued bombing of more civilians, occupation, annexation, settlements going to :

1. remove Hamas
2. remove the threat of further rocket attacks and future terrorist attacks.

Killing 30 children to get at one "terrorist" the other night. Now every brother(s) and rest of the family tree of those 30 kids will be a willing Hamas voter. Take out one, grow 100 more. Good plan.

Seems Israel wants to push everyone into being a justifiable target. So far Hamas, Hamas voters and family members of those suspected of crimes are fair game. Any innocents that get in the way - "what did they expect - they should have pressured their friends not to vote for Hamas" Just keep bombing and justifying. Annex and settle.

Yes it does. But again - this situation did not develop overnight and the full debate too historically complex to be aired out here on a thread supposedly aimed at the current conflict. There are reasons that Gaza has devolved into an open air prison, and however frustrating their avenue of recourse Hamas has made some choices here that have lead to the current assault - in spite of being warned this is exactly what would happen. I cannot believe people think the Israelis should have just sat back on their porches and watched the rockets come flying in ("ooo Ezra, did you see that one?"), or wait for some more kidnappings and executions. Maybe with enough patience we would have again seen some nice market square explosions again. Maybe one hundred for one prisoner exchanges were not generous enough. Whatever their twisted reasoning, Hamas has decided to turn away from talks and pursue this war. Now, as always, the extremists use innocent women and children for media effect and to gain sympathy. I am very sad for the Palestinian women and children that they have been so indoctrinated and mislead and deemed so expendable - and by their "democratically elected government". Very sad. It really does suck.

As the bombing of Gaza continues, the United Nations Human Rights Council has voted to investigate Israel for potential war crimes. The vote was 29 to one, with 17 abstentions. The United States cast the lone "no" vote. In Washington, State Department spokesperson Marie Harf told reporters: "We will stand up for Israel ... even if it means standing alone."

Doesn't sound like those rockets are doing too much harm to Israel's economy. Because Israel's military spending pushes their economy.

The military is a huge economic drain just like the gargantuan welfare support the "evil zionists" spend each year to keep their ultra orthodox communities from collapsing.

Such hypocrisy from a poster who believes Jewish lives mean less than that of the Palestinians. I mean this is a guy who cheered after 9/11. I guess Americans, Canadians and people from a host of other nations lives had less meaning as well. Certainly Hamas believe the innocent lives of Palestinian women and children are expendable, and serve their best life purpose being slaughtered, martyred and displayed for media effect in an effort to illicit sympathy. Absolutely reprehensible.
