People keep beating the drum about prohibition as if it had ONE SPECIFIC entity with one specific cause and effect. A prohibition can apply to a thousand things and have a thousand different reasons, causes and effects.

The prohibition against drunk driving is far different than the prohibition against spousal assault. They were prohibited for completely different reasons and have different causes and effects. The same is true for alcohol and THC.

Ending prohibition in all of the examples noted would reduce crime and the need to use resources in dealing with each separate type of crime but it would not in any way solve the problem associated to that prohibition.

What is this vast difference between why they had a prohibition on alcohol and if they had a prohibition on pot?
They say you can't believe everything they say.

You would have to make marijuana freely available in every country, state, province and territory across the world to make it valueless to criminal drug gangs. That would present its own set of problems to mankind.

Yep and it has to start somewhere. I'm happy their market is eroding. Prohibition causes more problems than it solves. Drugs need to be treated like a medical issue, not a criminal one.

zzontar ...

The violence that evolves from excessive alcohol is, IMO one huge difference in the need to control alcohol as compared to marijuana. The notably higher addiction rate would likely be the second most significant difference. The loss of body and mind function would likely also be high on the list with alcohol. The resistance to prohibition dominates the picture regarding alcohol but, for whatever reason, at the present time is only moderate regarding non medical marijuana blends; the opposite of what science tends to support.

What percentage of the population would simply descend into ongoing apathy, which disables the free enterprise competitive spirit would prove interesting if not disasterous.

To jennylives ...

IMO you are imagining a world that we will never see unless you can think of a way to convince the other 99% of people in the world to completely legalize all quantities and qualities of marijuana.

But then one must wonder what kind of world that would be.
