While this is good news it doesn't help the dead and injured!

Our friends go to Spain to watch their Grandson participate in a Soccer school and are run down by a Terrorist!

So sad and unnecessary! I don't understand the terrorist mindset.

Apparently "Robin Hood All Purpose" was the wrong answer!

This is such profoundly sad news Bsuds. My condolences you and your friends. The terrorists are in a co-mingled population, can't be identified, are ordinary people until they "turn" and are impossible to predict. I fail to see how Europe is going to "win" while so many innocent people die at their hands.
As WW3 develops, no one is going to be dissing the "preppers." What have you done?

Sorry to hear that. Rest in peace, Ian.

part the problem spain has is same the states have . they listen in on every conversation in real time by everyone . its next to impossible to zero in on who is up to no good . as a cia dude said today if countries focused in on known suspects your chances of catching and preventing go way up .

the terrorists in spain were communicating miles apart yet it was missed .

The Canadian killed in Thursday’s terrorist attack in Barcelona has been identified as Ian Moore Wilson, the father of Vancouver police Staff Sgt. Fiona Wilson.

“My dad, Ian Moore Wilson, was a much-loved husband, father, brother, and grandfather, who lived a healthy, active life alongside his partner of 53 years, my mum, Valerie,” said Wilson in a statement released Friday by the VPD. “He was compassionate, generous, adventurous, and always game for a lively debate, a good book, exploring new places, and a proper-sized pint.”

My sincerest condolences to his family and all who knew him. Very sad.

I don’t see how any of us can “win” against terrorism – at least until we start addressing the causes instead of just the symptoms. To be clear, we do need to continue to try and aggressively defend ourselves from the symptoms, that is, the terrorist attacks, but as we have seen it will be impossible to thwart every single plot – either by organized group or by the so-called lone wolf perpetrator. Even if the army of ISIL is completely destroyed, and countries build impregnable walls around their borders allowing no one of any different race, culture or religion to pass through, terror attacks will continue.

The left has attempted to explain Islamic terror as driven by "poverty" or "oppression", or American foreign policy, or Israel, or at least some sort of so-called “logical” grievance - “The root cause of terrorism is foreign domination and control of Muslim resources. The root cause of terrorism is the hatred of the Western way of life. The root cause of terrorism is alienation. The root cause of terrorism is poverty and illiteracy. The root cause of terrorism is the moral decadence of the West” – while the right would dismiss all that as nonsense and posit Islamic terror is, in fact, solely driven by a vile, totalitarian, and hallucinatory ideology - Islamism - that has its own dynamic, and that is not based on any logical or rational grievances. In my mind, both views are correct - except to the point where they dismiss the view of the other.

Islamic fundamentalist extremism is a real and spreading global threat. It is indeed a vile, totalitarian, and hallucinatory ideology, but we have to ask ourselves – where does it find its recruits? Where does it find its “soldiers” who are willing to indiscriminately kill and die in the name of such a twisted dogma? How are we to defend ourselves by closing borders to refugees and immigrants when many who commit terror acts in the name of Islamic extremism are home grown citizens? What inspires those citizens by birth to develop such hate and adopt such a twisted ideology? We can throw as many resources as possible toward discovering, exposing and thwarting terrorist plots but it will not be possible to stop them all, and scapegoating groups of people only reinforces the message of the extremists and helps with further recruitment.

The frequency of terror attacks is increasing. The attackers are emboldened by their success and we see attacks on a daily basis in Europe. Read the works of Kenneth R Loomis. His books predicted this, discuss how much worse it may yet become, and offer real solutions to the problem. Link: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B071HDKRWX

I find domestic terrorism (or even terrorism done by people who grew up in a fairly modern country and commit the act in another modern city) in the name of Isis or Allah or whoever they "do it for" quite shocking and interesting.

They grew up with higher education, technology, nice clothes, good food, etc... and then randomly shun it all and decide it's evil. It's very strange. They grew up (I presume) fairly happy and well to do. They weren't languishing away with nothing, hating the west or other countries with so much while they have nothing.

It's such a complex and mysterious phenomenon

^^^ Indeed, it is a very complex issue with no easy or simplistic solution. As you say, while some of these homegrown terrorists come from marginalized socioeconomic circumstance, many others come from privileged backgrounds and presumably had every opportunity. We can only guess what circumstances led to them becoming so disillusioned with the status quo as to resort to embracing such a twisted ideology. Way too much time on the internet conspiracy blogs perhaps.

Your presumption about my upbringing is also correct. I grew up in an upper-middle class household. Both my parents had university degrees, and as the findings of statistics would predict, I also graduated from university (twice in fact - from two different universities with two different degrees). I also grew up in a more idyllic time where the civil rights movement, although violent at times, held promise for a brighter future and more egalitarian (not to be confused with socialism or communism) society. Now we have a society where most peoples wages have remained stagnant while the income enjoyed by CEOs and the top one percent has increased five hundredfold. Of course, the increase in economic disparity worldwide is but only one part of the explanation in this very complex issue, but any solution cannot ignore the role it does play.

Sorry, I meant "they" and have no idea why I switched to you. I was referring to the domestic terrorists... lol
