7 killed in city’s deadliest day of shootings this year

Seven people were killed and another six were wounded in shootings Wednesday on the South and West sides of Chicago, marking the deadliest day of gunfire across the city so far this year.

Four other days this year have seen five fatal shootings, including last Tuesday and Wednesday, according to Chicago Sun-Times data. The other bursts of killings happened on Feb. 5 and Jan. 21, when 25 people were shot — the highest single-day toll of gunshot victims.

Since Jan. 1, at least 92 people have been fatally shot in Chicago, not including three more slain by police officers. Nearly 400 more people have been wounded in shootings.

The five latest fatal shootings happened in a two-hour spate of South Side gunfire Wednesday night.

Four people were killed and 10 others were wounded over the weekend in Chicago as violence this year continues to outpace last year.

As of Monday morning, the city had logged 103 homicides, compared with 101 this time a year ago, according to data compiled by the Tribune. At least 513 people have been shot this year, compared with 466 over the same time last year.

Chicago's violent gangs looting freight cars filled with guns

On the south side of Chicago, in one of the city's most dangerous neighborhoods, brazen criminals occasionally hit the gangster’s jackpot: they loot freight containers carrying shiny, new guns.

The guns – boxes and boxes of them – are part of shipments that are destined for gun companies or gun shops across the country. But as gangsters have caught on to the practice, they are ransacking these trains and stealing weapons that eventually make their way to the city’s blood-soaked streets.

"Any time you have individuals who can go in and steal guns from a train, that makes the environment very toxic," said Pastor Cory Brooks, who leads a church around the corner from the freight yard.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said that since 2013, more than 150 firearms have been reported stolen from freight trains. An Associated Press investigation revealed that some were traced to violent crimes and only 16 were recovered.

After violent weekend, Chicago nearing 1,000 gunshot victims this year

The number of people shot in Chicago this year is nearing 1,000 after a violent weekend left seven dead and 31 others wounded, according to data kept by the Tribune.

As of Monday morning, at least 992 people had been shot in Chicago this year. Last year, the city passed the 1,000 mark on April 20 and had reached 1,054 by this time, the Tribune data show.

I spent quite a few years as a youth living in the Chicago area ...it's always been a very contentious city

That being said, I loved Chicago as a kid and enjoy visiting it now as an adult.

It's a shame though how the violence continues and is ramping up.

The city has so many wonderful aspects.
