Actually, the 'ape' looks gray/white to me, covered in brownish red crayon with white lips and dark eye liner... so it must be accurate. Many initial renditions are always shown to be 'ape' like such as Neanderthal, at first. Then after 50 years of study they make them look more human.

It would take some serious creative license to make this skull look human. That's Australopithecus. The specimen in question is even older.
