Trump might not wait. As he has said (loosely translated from one of his many awkward interviews),

U.S. bombers drill over Korean peninsula

South Korean and Japanese jets joined exercises with two supersonic U.S. B-1B bombers above and near the Korean peninsula on Thursday, two days after North Korea sharply raised tension by firing a missile over Japan.

But I think he will; not because he's worried about N Korea, but because he's bound to have concerns about the Russian and/or Chinese reaction if he strikes pre-emptively.

Can you give me an example of an incident where he has previously exhibited such forethought ...

Putin says putting pressure on North Korea is a 'dead-end road'

Russian President Vladimir Putin has weighed into the North Korea crisis, warning the US and others against going down a "dead-end road" and calling for talks to resolve the issue.

"Russia believes that the policy of putting pressure on Pyongyang to stop its nuclear missile program is misguided and futile," Putin said in an article released Thursday by the Kremlin, ahead of the BRICS summit in Xiamen, China.

"The region's problems should only be settled through a direct dialogue of all the parties concerned without any preconditions. Provocations, pressure and militarist and insulting rhetoric are a dead-end road," Putin said.

North Korea's military: A nation built for war

On Aug. 30, 2017, North Korea launched a ballistic missile, named Hwasong-12, over Japan as part of its test drills. It traveled around 1,678 miles (2,700 km) at a low height over Hokkaido, Japan, before crashing into the sea off the nation's eastern coast. While Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and the U.N. Security Council condemned the act, North Korea said that the launch was “the first step” of military operations in the Pacific

Nuclear test?
"After analyzing data provided by the Japan Meteorological Agency, the Japanese government concluded that North Korea has conducted a nuclear test," Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono said in a live television broadcast.

North Korea will make a “special” announcement later on Sunday, according to South Korea’s Yonhap news agency. The regime is set to make a “special and important” announcement at 3pm Pyongyang time, the North’s state-run TV broadcaster said, but did not provide further details.

ETA: According to Google, that announcement would be at 11:30PM our time.

I think Putin is right about this but, given the anti-Russia hysteria currently prevalent in the United States, it's unlikely anyone is going to heed this advice.

“We’ll see,” Trump said, while exiting St. John’s Episcopal Church in Washington after a reporter asked him whether he planned to attack North Korea.

I'm pretty sure they aren't begging for war so much as Trump is anxious to shoot stuff.
