Something about the jetstreams getting stuck. Sure someone can expain it better but severe weather that should move east with the jetstream, gets stuck as well and will hover over one area for an extended period. What might have been a passing heavy rain in the past now becomes a super storm. Unfortunately this also means that extreme weather events like Harvey and Irma will become the new norm if the changes to the jetstreams are long term.

Here's a graph showing all cat 5 Atlantic hurricanes.

to be fair, did they really have the appropriate measurement equipment back in the day to measure hurricanes of this magnitude? I remember reading about the Hurricane in New Orleans in 1969 - the main measurement equipment was destroyed before the Hurricane even got to full strength.

Back in the 60’s, horse-drawn carriages had pretty much disappeared. We had indoor plumbing, electricity, radio – even television had become common. In 1969, using the stone-age technology of the day, men were sent to the moon.

Yes, there was weather equipment more than capable of accurately measuring hurricane force winds. Today’s anemometers won’t survive being struck by airborne debris in a tornado or hurricane. They deploy lots of them, so a few will survive and tell the story.

They'd better leave/prepare fully. Here's the latest, from the most reliable forecast model [EURO Model 12z] for Irma through this whole shebang thus far:

I just read that a 16 year old professional surfer was killed catching a wave during Irma.

There were fewer instruments 100 years ago though, and that does make a difference.

she is saying as the climate warms there will be a greater frequency in hurricanes and more of them will be category 3,4,5 storms.

Warmer climate - more hurricanes
cooler climate - less hurricanes

Hurricanes are earths' air conditioners
