You must have missed the "Tubbs Fire" that started northeast of Calistoga and ran right into the suburbs of Santa Rosa in less than 6 hours. (22 kms.) It followed the same path as the Hanley fire of 1964. Only difference being it covered the same ground over a period of 6 days.

I'm still diggin through the details, but there are a few very interesting notes from that fire around the topic of fuel loading.

I haven't checked to see when the last lightning strike hit anywhere in California. Of course a downed power line or discarded glass container, those both would be still be human caused (unless wildlife started drinking from bottles & beavers went after power poles).
Beg the question, is there beavers in California.

Misery added to misery.

Sufficiently advanced incompetence is indistinguishable from malice. There’s a certain point at which ignorance becomes malice, at which there is simply no way to become THAT ignorant except deliberately and maliciously.

An epic battle rages on.

With the movement of the blocking high pressure ridge came hopes that the Santa Ana winds might start to abate. 17 days this Santa Ana has persisted. But, with the high pressure moving offshore to the north of Santa Barbara came another wind event known as the Sundowner and that put the communities of Santa Barbara, Montecito and Summerland in immediate peril.

Winds yesterday were clocked at 30 mph with gusts to 50+. This, once again limited the ability to use airtankers and rotary wing and caused what I could only describe as a street fight in the hills above Montecito and Santa Barbara. Yesterday the fire was pushed South and West by the predominantly northern flow associated with the Sundowner.

Firefighters utilized water tenders to apply Phos Chek around some structures to increase the survivability.

Resources currently assigned to the Thomas Fire:
8,529 Fire personnel
972 Fire Engines
166 Fire Crews
34 Helicopters
77 Dozers
94 Water Tenders

Airtankers are being utilized on this fire when conditions allow and they are available. Of course Cal Fire has to deal with new starts daily and they have other incidents that they are managing. The Thomas fire threatens 18,000 structures and has destroyed 1020 structures and damaged another 242. The fire is currently 40% contained and estimated at 269,000 acres – 108860 hectares.

While fires of this type may be of a higher frequency for the agencies such as Cal Fire, State and County cooperators, the fact that they remain high risk was driven home on December 14, with the loss of Fire Engineer Cory Iverson. Iverson was assigned to a 17 person strike team engaged in structure protection and the initial report released by the US Fire Administration notes his activity as “advance hose lines” “on-scene fire” “outdoor property”.

His cause of death has now been released as smoke inhalation, thermal burns.
